Robinson R44 specifications at a glance

The Robinson R44 is the world's most-produced light helicopter, a piston-engine four-seater carrying one pilot and up to three passengers. It cruises at about 110 knots with a range of roughly 300 nautical miles. Its popularity comes down to simple economics: the R44 delivers the lowest hourly operating cost of any helicopter Icarus Jet charters, making it the entry point into private helicopter travel.

When to choose the R44

The R44 is the right call for one to three passengers on short hops, sightseeing flights, and photography missions where budget matters more than cabin space. Luggage capacity is limited, so it suits day trips rather than multi-bag itineraries. For more seats, quieter flight, or more baggage, step up to the Airbus H120 or H130.

Chartering the R44 with Icarus Jet

We arrange R44 charters for city tours and short island connections, with full coordination of helipad slots and ground handling. Flying over Athens is a signature route; see our Robinson R66 Athens tour page for the turbine alternative. Request a quote and our 24/7 operations team typically responds within 60 minutes.

Where the R44 flies with us

The R44 covers the shortest and most price-sensitive missions in our helicopter fleet: Athens city tours and coastal sightseeing, single-island transfers, aerial photography and survey work, and quick positioning flights where the alternative is several hours by road and ferry. Many of our Athens operations use Megara Airport, where slot coordination and handling are straightforward — see the Robinson R66 Athens page for the turbine alternative on the same routes.

What the R44 is not the right aircraft for

Being straight about the limits saves everyone a wasted quote. The R44 carries up to three passengers with light bags only, so it does not suit airport arrivals with full luggage. It is a piston aircraft, so it is noisier in the cabin than the turbine types and is more weather-limited on marginal days. For extended overwater sectors, larger groups, or anything luggage-heavy, we will recommend the H130 or a private jet instead.

What a helicopter charter with Icarus Jet includes

Every helicopter charter is quoted all-in: aircraft and crew, landing and helipad fees, ground handling at both ends, and coordination with the departure and arrival airports. Where a flight connects to a private jet leg, the two are scheduled together so passengers move straight from one aircraft to the other without waiting. Our operations team runs 24/7 and returns a firm quote within 60 minutes.

Booking and lead times

In the Mediterranean summer season, helipad slots at popular island destinations are the constraint rather than aircraft availability. Two to three days’ notice is comfortable for July and August; outside peak season, same-day and next-day departures are usually workable. Weather is the other variable — light helicopters operate visually, so afternoon wind on the Aegean and low cloud in mountain terrain can shift a departure by a few hours. We plan around both and keep passengers informed rather than leaving them at the pad.
