Yes. Three parallel runways, two of 13,123 feet and one of 12,467 feet, ICAO Category 10 fire cover and full customs and immigration. It is Saudi Arabia's busiest airport and handles private traffic alongside a very large scheduled and pilgrim operation. There is no airport slot or PPR; the approval that governs the trip is the national GACA landing permit.

Because it is the gateway to Makkah. Every pilgrim arriving by air for Hajj or Umrah comes through Jeddah or Madinah, and Jeddah carries the larger share. It has a purpose-built Hajj terminal for that traffic, and during the Hajj season the airport operates at an intensity no other field in the Kingdom approaches.

Congestion and pressure on everything: ramp, handling, customs and ground transport. A private arrival is entirely possible during Hajj but has to be planned as a peak-season operation, with parking confirmed well ahead and realistic expectations about ground time. Outside Hajj and the busiest Umrah periods, Jeddah is a straightforward large international airport.

It is arriving. Universal Aviation is to manage an approximately 108,000 square foot dedicated private aviation hangar with full ground handling at King Abdulaziz, expected to open later in 2026. That is a storage and handling facility rather than a passenger terminal, and it sits alongside the dedicated general aviation terminal Universal opened at Dammam in February 2026. Together they mark the first purpose-built business aviation infrastructure in the Kingdom.

No, handling is not mandatory in the regulatory sense, though every private movement uses an agent. Jet A-1 is available.

Yes. Landing and overflight permits for non-scheduled flights are issued by the General Authority of Civil Aviation and are obtained through approved local agents within the Kingdom. Complete documentation is what determines the turnaround. Since 1 May 2025 foreign operators may also fly charter between Saudi cities without a local partner, which simplifies a Jeddah to Riyadh or Jeddah to Madinah itinerary considerably.

The airport's new main terminal, opened in 2019 and covering some 810,000 square metres. It replaced the older north and south terminals for most scheduled traffic and is part of why published guides to Jeddah from before 2019 describe a very different airport.

Jeddah for Makkah, which is about an hour and a half away by road and has no airport of its own. Madinah for the second holy city and for pilgrims beginning their journey there. Many Umrah itineraries arrive at one and depart from the other, and under the 2025 rules a foreign-registered aircraft can now fly that domestic leg without a local partner.

ICAO Category 10, the highest published, shared in the Kingdom only with Madinah. That is what you would expect at an airport handling the largest aircraft in the world through the Hajj terminal.

It opened in 1981, named for King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, and was built to handle both the growing scheduled traffic of the Red Sea coast and the pilgrim flows that had outgrown the old Jeddah airport. The Hajj terminal, with its tent-like roof, became one of the most recognised airport structures in the world.
