The route

Why fly private from Cairo to El Gouna?

Cairo to El Gouna is the Red Sea weekend on our desk: 217 nautical miles, about 45 minutes in the air, against five hours or more on the road. On a clear day a southerly departure from Cairo puts the pyramids of Giza off the wing before the aircraft turns for the coast. The resort has its own airstrip, which is the reason many people ask for this sector, and the honest answer is that a turboprop lands there and a jet lands at Hurghada twenty minutes away. Both are a morning.

Why private works here

Leave Sphinx, 35 minutes from downtown Cairo, and land on a turboprop at the El Gouna strip with the resort vehicles at the aircraft and the marina minutes away. Or land a jet at Hurghada, the longest runway on the Red Sea, and be at the resort in twenty minutes. No airline queue, no drive, and the return leaves when the weekend ends.

Aircraft fit

The El Gouna strip is 5,265 feet of private runway: turboprops and light aircraft only, with fuel and fire cover confirmed per operation. A King Air 350 carries eight there in under an hour and is the right answer for most families. A light or midsize jet lands at Hurghada in 40 minutes, and for a group with luggage the midsize plus the short transfer is often the better trip.

Advisor note

People ask for the El Gouna airport because the resort built one, and it is a good strip for the aircraft it was built for. It is not a jet airport, it has no permanent customs, and it needs the resort's permission on top of the Egyptian permit. We quote the turboprop into the strip and the jet into Hurghada on the same page and let the passengers, the luggage and the dates decide.

Cost

What determines the cost of a Cairo to El Gouna private charter?

A 45 minute sector is priced on the aircraft, the landing, the permissions and the dates. These are the things that move the number on Cairo to El Gouna.

01

Aircraft and landing

A turboprop into the resort strip is the direct answer for up to eight. A light or midsize jet into Hurghada is faster in the air and adds twenty minutes on the road. The desk prices both.

02

Round trip or two one-ways

A weekend usually keeps the aircraft with you or brings it back for you on the day you choose. A longer stay is sometimes better as two one-way flights. The desk prices both and tells you which is cleaner.

03

The Egypt permit

Egypt requires a landing permit from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority for private and charter flights, domestic legs included. We plan on four business days and file it with the registration, insurance, AOC and crew details, and a specific stated purpose of flight. It is routine, and it is the one thing that cannot be fixed the day before.

04

Permissions on the ground

Hurghada requires prior permission filed with the permit. The El Gouna strip requires the resort's permission as well, and its fuel and fire cover are confirmed per operation. All of it is arranged before the quote.

05

The season

The coast flies year round with the peak in winter. The winter holiday weeks and the Egyptian public holidays are the tightest for aircraft out of Cairo. Those dates need firm bookings a couple of weeks ahead.

06

What the number covers

We tell you what the quote covers before you book and we hold the operator to the number we gave you. No surprises on the invoice is the point of using the desk.

Before you fly

What should I know before flying Cairo to El Gouna?

It is a domestic flight, so there is no customs at either end. Bring passports or Egyptian ID; the crew checks them at the aircraft. You can arrive at the terminal fifteen to twenty minutes before departure.

El Gouna Airport is a private resort strip. A single 5,265 foot runway at 56 feet elevation, owned by Orascom, the resort developer, for light aircraft and turboprops. It has no permanent customs, so international arrivals clear at Hurghada, and it needs the resort's permission on top of the Egyptian permit. Handling is through the resort.

Hurghada is the jet airport. A 13,123 foot main runway with a second parallel, Egypt's second busiest airport, prior permission filed with the permit, and handling through Egyptian Aviation Services. El Gouna is about twenty minutes north by road, which is how most private travellers reach the resort. The town was built by Samih Sawiris on the Red Sea with the Abu Tig marina at its centre, a few thousand residents year round and several times that in the winter season.

On the Cairo side, Sphinx is the better private airport for most trips. A single 11,975 foot runway west of the city in Giza, open 24 hours with customs on site, no airport slot, no airline queue, about 35 minutes from downtown and materially cheaper to operate into. Cairo International in Heliopolis earns its place when you are connecting onto a scheduled flight, when the destination is the east of the city, or when the aircraft might need maintenance support, which Sphinx cannot provide. It is slot coordinated with mandatory handling, so the permit, slot and handling are filed together.

No time change and no customs. El Gouna is on Egypt time, and a mid-morning departure from Sphinx has you at the marina for lunch either way.

When to go

When is the best time to fly Cairo to El Gouna?

The Red Sea flies year round with the peak in winter, when the coast is warm and Cairo is not. The winter holiday weeks and the Egyptian public holidays are the busiest for aircraft out of Cairo and for the resort, and need firm dates a couple of weeks ahead. Allow four business days for the permit on any first trip.

Summer is hot, quiet and easy to book. A few days of notice is normal from Cairo outside the peak, with the Hurghada permission or the resort permission filed alongside the permit.

Questions

Cairo to El Gouna private charter questions

How long is a private flight from Cairo to El Gouna?

About 40 minutes on a jet to Hurghada and about 55 minutes on a turboprop to the resort strip. The sector is 217 nautical miles from Sphinx to Hurghada and 205 to El Gouna. Hurghada is about twenty minutes from the resort by road.

Can a private jet land at El Gouna?

No. The El Gouna strip is 5,265 feet of private runway for light aircraft and turboprops, with no permanent customs. Jets land at Hurghada, twenty minutes south, which has the longest runway on the Red Sea. A King Air 350 class turboprop lands at El Gouna itself.

Which is better, El Gouna airport or Hurghada?

It depends on the aircraft. A turboprop into El Gouna puts you at the resort with no transfer. A light or midsize jet into Hurghada is faster in the air and adds twenty minutes by road, and is often the better trip for a group with luggage. The desk quotes both.

Which Cairo airport do private flights to El Gouna use?

Sphinx, west of the city in Giza, for most trips: no slot, no airline queue, about 35 minutes from downtown and cheaper to operate into. Cairo International in Heliopolis when you are connecting from a scheduled flight or the destination is the east of the city.

Which aircraft is best for Cairo to El Gouna?

A King Air 350 class turboprop for up to eight, landing on the resort strip. A Citation CJ or Phenom 300 class light jet for six or seven into Hurghada. A Citation XLS or Hawker 800 class midsize jet for eight with luggage and dive bags into Hurghada.

What permissions does a flight to El Gouna need?

The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority permit, planned at four business days, on every flight. Hurghada adds prior permission filed with the permit. The El Gouna strip adds the resort's permission, with fuel and fire cover confirmed per operation. The desk arranges all of it.

What determines the cost of a Cairo to El Gouna charter?

The aircraft and therefore the landing, whether the trip is a weekend return or two one-way flights, the permissions, and the dates against the winter peak. We tell you what the quote covers before you book.

Can I fly El Gouna to Cairo on the same page?

Yes. The sector is quoted in both directions from either field. Put El Gouna or Hurghada as the departure in the form and the desk handles it the same way.

Is there customs on a Cairo to El Gouna flight?

No, it is a domestic flight. Bring a passport or Egyptian ID for the crew to check at the aircraft. An international arrival into El Gouna would clear at Hurghada, because the strip has no permanent customs.

Can I fly straight from El Gouna to Luxor or Sharm?

Yes. A turboprop from the resort strip or a jet from Hurghada flies on to Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh or back to Cairo as one itinerary, with each leg covered by the Egyptian permit.

Can I combine El Gouna and Aswan in one trip?

Yes. Cairo to El Gouna, a few nights at the marina, then El Gouna or Hurghada to Aswan in under an hour for the Nile, and home to Cairo from there, is quoted as one itinerary with a single permit file. The desk arranges the cars and can add hotels along the way.

When is the best time to fly to El Gouna?

Winter is the peak, when the Red Sea is warm and Cairo is cool. The route flies year round; summer is hot, quiet and easy to book at short notice.

How much notice do I need to book Cairo to El Gouna?

Allow four business days for the Egyptian permit on a first trip. After that a few days is normal, and for the winter holiday weeks give the desk firm dates a couple of weeks ahead.
