What should I know before flying Mykonos to Bodrum?
It is an international flight, so bring passports for everyone aboard. The helicopter must pass through an international airport in each country for passport control: Samos on the Greek side and Milas-Bodrum on the Turkish side. Mykonos is the lift, not the airport. A beach club or hotel pad with the venue's approval is the usual departure, because the airport in season is Level 3 slotted with the airlines first, forty minutes on the ground and no parking. Lifting from the airport pad is possible with terminal charges.
Samos is the passport stop. Samos International at Pythagoreio, a 6,693 foot runway with customs, fuel and a slot requirement for helicopter movements, about 30 minutes on the ground. From Samos the Turkish coast is minutes away.
Milas-Bodrum is the arrival. The international airport for the Bodrum peninsula, a 9,843 foot runway at 21 feet about 36 kilometres north east of the town, with passport control and handling on arrival. The villas, the marinas and the resorts of the peninsula are about forty minutes by road, or a short helicopter hop where a pad has been approved.
Daylight, weight and the clock. Helicopters on the islands operate sunrise to sunset, luggage is by weight, and the meltemi can delay a lift on a strong afternoon. Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year, so in summer there is no time change; in winter Turkey is an hour ahead of Greece.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Mykonos to Bodrum?
June to September is the season, when the ferries and the airline schedules are full and the crossing is worth its place. July and August are the tightest weeks for helicopters in the Cyclades and for pad approvals at both ends, and book four to six weeks ahead. June and September give the same crossing with easier availability and calmer air.
Outside the season the crossing is quiet, the passport stop still applies, and a few days of notice is comfortable.
