Tripoli
Airport
A military airfield in the mountains of Arcadia, in the centre of the Peloponnese, used sparingly by the Hellenic Air Force and by a local aeroclub. A 6,373 foot runway at 2,113 feet elevation, no fuel and no civil terminal: a Tripoli request is answered with Kalamata or Athens, and this guide says why.

The Airport
Tripoli at a glance
Tripoli Airport carries the ICAO code LGTP and no IATA code. A single runway of 6,373 feet at 2,113 feet elevation on the Arcadian plateau, two to three kilometres north east of the town of Tripoli in the centre of the Peloponnese.
It is a Hellenic Air Force field opened in 1973, used sparingly by the air force and by the Arcadia aeroclub, with no civil terminal, no customs, no handling and no fuel. For a private flight to the central Peloponnese the answer is Kalamata, about an hour and a quarter by road, or Athens.
Facts checked against the Hellenic Air Force and Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority publications, plus Icarus Jet operations data.

The Role
The field in the middle of the Peloponnese
Tripoli sits on the Arcadian plateau at 2,113 feet, the highest airfield of any note in the Peloponnese, an hour from the coast in every direction. The Hellenic Air Force uses it sparingly and the Arcadia aeroclub flies from it, which is why the code appears on charts and why a search for the airport finds this page. Locally the runway is better known for the motorcycle drag races it has hosted than for aviation.
For a passenger flight it is not an option. No civil terminal, no customs, no handling, no fuel and no civil permission to land. The 6,373 foot runway at altitude would in any case make a hot-day departure a careful calculation even if it were available.
Operating
What the desk does with a Tripoli request
The desk answers with Kalamata, the civil airport for the Peloponnese, about an hour and a quarter south west by road, with an 8,868 foot operational runway shared with the air force, handling that is not mandatory and parking the aircraft can keep. Kalamata is also the gateway to Costa Navarino. For the northern Peloponnese, Nafplio and the Argolid, Athens International is about two hours by road and the surer slot.
A helicopter is the other answer for Arcadia and the mountain villages: from Athens or Kalamata to an approved pad, in daylight, planned by weight for the altitude.
History
Opened in 1973, quiet since
The airfield opened in 1973 as a Hellenic Air Force station and has never carried scheduled or general aviation passenger traffic. The air force keeps it, the aeroclub uses it, and the plateau around it has stayed farmland.
The civil traffic for the region went to Kalamata on the coast, which has grown into the Peloponnese’s airport as Costa Navarino and the Mani have grown as destinations.
Nearby
Tripoli and the fields around it
A Tripoli request is a Kalamata or Athens operation. The civil fields for the Peloponnese, and the military and aeroclub fields that share the region.
Kalamata is the field for the central and southern Peloponnese and Costa Navarino, Athens for the north and the Argolid, and Zakynthos across the water for the Ionian. Tanagra, Elefsis and Tatoi are, like Tripoli, military or aeroclub fields with little or no civil access.

Questions
Tripoli, answered
Can a private jet land at Tripoli?
No. Tripoli is a Hellenic Air Force field used sparingly by the air force and a local aeroclub, with no civil terminal, no customs, no handling and no fuel. The desk answers a Tripoli request with Kalamata or Athens.
Which airport should I use for Arcadia and the central Peloponnese?
Kalamata, about an hour and a quarter south west by road, with an 8,868 foot runway, handling that is not mandatory and parking the aircraft can keep. For Nafplio and the Argolid, Athens International is about two hours and the surer slot.
Why does Tripoli appear in airport searches?
Because it has an ICAO code, a 6,373 foot runway and an aeroclub, so it turns up on charts and in flight planning tools. None of that makes it a passenger airport.
How long is the runway at Tripoli?
Runway 02/20 is about 1,942 metres, 6,373 feet, asphalt, at 2,113 feet elevation. It is a military runway and the figure is for reference; it is not available to civil traffic.
Is there fuel at Tripoli?
No. There is no fuel at the field for any civil use. Kalamata and Athens both have Jet A-1.
Can I reach Arcadia by helicopter?
Yes, from Athens or Kalamata to an approved pad, in daylight, with the flight planned by weight for the altitude of the plateau. The desk books the helicopter with the jet and confirms the pad before it quotes.
How high is Tripoli?
The field sits at 2,113 feet on the Arcadian plateau, the highest airfield of note in the Peloponnese. Even if it were available, a summer departure would be a careful performance calculation on a 6,373 foot runway.
What time zone is Greece in?
Eastern European Time, EET in winter and EEST in summer, UTC+2 and UTC+3. The desk files the Kalamata or Athens handling in UTC and confirms the local times back to you.
