Malindi at a glance
Malindi carries the ICAO code HKML and the identifier MYD. It sits west of Malindi town in Kilifi County on the Indian Ocean coast, and is operated by the Kenya Airports Authority.
It serves Malindi, Watamu, Mambrui and the greater northern coast tourism circuit. Small, at sea level, and with the one thing a field this size usually lacks: customs and immigration on site.
The Constraint
Runway length, and nothing else
Malindi is the opposite of the Nairobi fields. There is no elevation problem at all, the airport sits at 80 feet. The constraint is simply pavement.
17/35 is 4,600 feet long and 98 feet wide. 08/26 is 3,549 feet long and 76 feet wide. That places Malindi firmly in light aircraft and turboprop territory. Anything larger goes to Mombasa and drives up the coast.
The operating window is the second item. Malindi runs in daylight rather than around the clock. Published sources give the international window as roughly 06:00 to 18:30 local, while older material, including our own previous guide, described a narrower schedule with weekend restrictions. Because those accounts differ we confirm the current hours for the specific date rather than quoting a figure we cannot stand behind. For an arrival near either end of the day, settle this first.
What Malindi offers in exchange is position and a customs facility, which for a Watamu stay is worth a great deal.

The northern coast argument
Malindi is roughly 132 kilometres from Mombasa by road and 104 by air, and about 485 kilometres from Jomo Kenyatta by road. It is genuinely a coastal field rather than a Nairobi satellite.
For a client staying at Watamu or on the northern coast, arriving at Malindi and driving a short distance beats arriving at Mombasa and driving the length of the coast. We price both rather than defaulting to the larger airport, because the ground difference is substantial and the aircraft is usually the only thing that decides it.
The facilities are modest and it is worth saying so. Two check-in counters, a departure lounge smaller than the traffic warrants, and an apron connected to the runway by a taxiway with room for three aircraft. This is a small coastal airport, not a business aviation centre.
History
From an Eden Rock airstrip
Malindi began as an airstrip used by private travellers flying in to the Eden Rock Hotel in the 1950s, with terminal construction following in 1957. Its scale today still reflects those origins more than its current traffic.
The Kenyan government funded a modernisation between 2011 and 2012, carried out by Dickways Construction at a cost of around 200 million Kenyan shillings, roughly two million US dollars. That work expanded the terminal building, built a new control tower and rehabilitated the runways.
Further expansion is planned, intended to support larger aircraft and more frequent international traffic. If that proceeds, the runway constraint that currently defines the field is the thing most likely to change.

What Kenya requires before you go
Landing and overflight permits are issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. We plan on 72 business hours, though shorter turnarounds are often achievable when the file is complete.
The KCAA will want the aircraft type and maximum takeoff weight, certificates of airworthiness and registration, worldwide insurance, crew licences and the full schedule. Incomplete documentation causes more delay than the published lead time.
