Moi International
Airport, Mombasa

Kenya’s coastal gateway, and the easy one to operate into. A 10,990 foot runway at 200 feet of elevation, so none of the density altitude that governs the Nairobi fields. Customs on the field.

The Airport

Mombasa at a glance

Moi International carries the ICAO code HKMO and the identifier MBA. It sits about twenty minutes from central Mombasa, is operated by the Kenya Airports Authority, and is Kenya’s coastal international gateway.

Two terminals, international and domestic, built adjacently. Two runways, the main one long enough for widebody traffic. And, unusually for Kenya, no altitude problem at all.

The Advantage

Sea level, and why that changes the aircraft

Every other Kenyan airport in this library is governed by elevation. Jomo Kenyatta is at 5,330 feet and Wilson at 5,546, and in a warm climate that costs real payload on departure.

Mombasa is at 200 feet. The same aircraft that needs a careful performance calculation out of Nairobi simply departs from here. Combined with a 10,990 foot main runway, the field imposes essentially no aircraft constraint.

If the destination is the Kenyan coast, arriving directly at Mombasa rather than clearing in Nairobi and flying back out is both quicker and operationally simpler. That is worth stating because the default assumption for a Kenya trip is often Nairobi, and for a coastal stay it is the wrong one.

There is a second runway, 15/33 at 4,473 feet, and full customs and immigration on the field.

History

Port Reitz, and a war on two oceans

The airport was built during the Second World War by the Engineer Corps of the South African Army, and was originally called Port Reitz Airport.

Its wartime role was unusually broad. It served as a land base for the Fleet Air Arm supporting the British Eastern Fleet, which was based at nearby Kilindini Harbour from 1942. The RAF operated anti-submarine Catalina flying boats off the East African coast from here, through AHQ East Africa and No. 246 Wing. And the South African Air Force used it during the campaign against Italy in Abyssinia.

The airport opened to international traffic in 1980.

It has since twice served as a humanitarian hub. From 18 August to 4 December 1992 it was the regional command and control headquarters for the United States Central Command’s Operation Provide Relief. Then from July to September 1994 it ran almost continuously as a refuelling station during Operation Support Hope into Rwanda, with empty C-141 and C-5 freighters returning to Europe routing through Mombasa because fuel was scarce in the African interior. The airlift stopped that October when runway expansion work began.

The maintenance history is still visible on the field. Benair Engineering built its first hangar here in 1997 as a temporary structure and it is still standing, beside the government hangar built during the war to maintain Catalinas. Benair has been the principal maintenance facility on the Kenyan coast ever since, and is named for its chief engineer, Geoffrey Benaglia.

Permits

What Kenya requires before you go

Landing and overflight permits are issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. We plan on 72 business hours, though shorter turnarounds are often achievable when the file is complete.

The KCAA will want the aircraft type and maximum takeoff weight, certificates of airworthiness and registration, worldwide insurance, crew licences and the full schedule. Incomplete documentation causes more delay than the published lead time.

Handling is available and we arrange it regardless. We have not been able to confirm from an authoritative source whether it is formally mandatory, so we do not claim that it is.

Nearby

Mombasa and the Kenyan fields

Kenya divides cleanly: two international gateways, one inland and one coastal, and the fields that fly the safari circuit.

Malindi is the call for Watamu, Mambrui and the northern coastal circuit, about 132 kilometres from Mombasa by road and 104 by air. Worth choosing on where the client is actually staying rather than defaulting here. Jomo Kenyatta for inland Kenya and long-haul arrivals heading to the interior. Wilson for the safari circuit, which is a Nairobi operation rather than a coastal one.

Questions

Mombasa, answered

Can private jets use Mombasa Moi International?

Yes, comfortably. The main runway is 10,990 feet and the airport sits at 200 feet elevation, so unlike the Nairobi fields there is no density altitude penalty to work around. For a long-haul arrival heading to the Kenyan coast, Mombasa is the natural entry point rather than routing through Nairobi and flying back out.

Why is Mombasa easier to operate into than Nairobi?

Elevation. Jomo Kenyatta is at 5,330 feet and Wilson at 5,546, and in a warm climate that costs real payload on departure. Mombasa is at 200 feet. The same aircraft that needs careful calculation out of Nairobi simply departs from Mombasa. If the destination is the coast, that is a genuine operational advantage rather than a marginal one.

How long are the runways at Mombasa?

Two. The main runway 03/21 is 10,990 feet by 151 feet, and there is a second runway 15/33 at 4,473 feet, both asphalt concrete. The main runway takes widebody traffic without difficulty.

Is there customs at Mombasa?

Yes, it is a full international gateway with two terminals, Terminal 1 for international and Terminal 2 for domestic, built adjacently so moving between them is straightforward. That makes Mombasa a practical clearance point for a coastal trip rather than clearing in Nairobi first.

What is Mombasa the gateway to?

The Kenyan coast: Diani, the south coast beaches, Watamu and the coastal resort circuit, and onward connections up the coast. Central Mombasa is about twenty minutes from the terminals. For the northern coast and Watamu specifically, Malindi is closer still.

Do you need a permit for Mombasa?

Kenya landing and overflight permits are issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and apply at every Kenyan airport. We plan on 72 business hours. The KCAA will want aircraft type and maximum takeoff weight, airworthiness and registration certificates, worldwide insurance, crew licences and the full schedule.

Is ground handling mandatory at Mombasa?

Handling is available and we arrange it regardless, but we have not been able to confirm from an authoritative source whether it is formally mandatory, so we do not state that it is.

Is there aircraft maintenance at Mombasa?

Yes, and with real history to it. Benair Engineering built its first private aircraft maintenance hangar at the airport in 1997 as a temporary structure, and it is still standing. It sits next to the government hangar built during the Second World War to maintain Catalina flying boats. Benair has been the principal maintenance facility on the Kenyan coast since, and is named after its chief engineer, Geoffrey Benaglia.

What is the history of Moi International Airport?

It was built during the Second World War by the Engineer Corps of the South African Army, and was originally called Port Reitz Airport. It opened to international traffic in 1980.

Has Mombasa been used for humanitarian operations?

Twice, notably. From 18 August to 4 December 1992 it was the regional command and control headquarters for the United States Central Command's Operation Provide Relief. Then from July to September 1994 it was used almost continuously as a refuelling station during Operation Support Hope into Rwanda, with empty C-141 and C-5 freighters returning to Europe routing via Mombasa because fuel was scarce in the African interior. That airlift stopped in October when runway expansion work began.

Mombasa or Malindi for the coast?

Mombasa for the south coast, Diani, and anything needing a full international gateway or a long runway. Malindi for Watamu, Mambrui and the northern coastal circuit, where it is materially closer. Malindi is about 132 kilometres from Mombasa by road and 104 by air, so the choice is worth making on where the client is actually staying rather than defaulting to the larger field.

What time zone is Mombasa in?

East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year. Kenya does not observe daylight saving.
