How to judge a card before you buy

Safety first. Check that the operator or broker behind the card is audited by ARGUS or Wyvern Wingman. If it is audited by neither, walk away, whatever the rate says.

Ask where your money sits. A card is a bulk prepayment, so the question is whether the balance is held in escrow or in the operator’s own account. If it is the latter, check how long the company has been trading and whether it has ever been in litigation over card deposits.

Fixed, dynamic or hybrid rates. A genuinely fixed hourly rate is hard for an operator to hold, because aircraft are repositioned to reach you and that cost moves. Dynamic and hybrid cards cap the rate instead, and can price below the market on the day.

Availability and call-out. Not every provider guarantees an aircraft, and some need up to 72 hours’ notice. Read the peak-day surcharges and blackout dates alongside the guarantee, because holidays and event weeks are exactly when a card is supposed to earn its keep.

Cancellation. Windows run from about 72 hours down to 12. Cancel inside the window and the charge can reach the full charter fee, so the cancellation clause matters as much as the rate.

Fees on top of the hours. Some programmes charge a membership fee, and a few add a monthly maintenance fee on top of that. Both should be amortised across the hours you actually expect to fly before you compare one card against another.

Cabin interchange. Moving between light, midsize and heavy aircraft on the same card is usually restricted, and where it is allowed it can carry a significant fee, more so at peak times.

Service area. The quoted rate normally covers one region. A card priced for the domestic United States will not cover Canada, the Caribbean or Central and South America at the same number, and international legs add fuel, ground handling and crew overnight costs. A few of the largest operators do not distinguish between domestic and international rates; most do.

Minors and pets. If an unaccompanied minor may need to travel, confirm the policy in writing. Pets are widely accepted but usually carry both a fee and vaccination paperwork.

The terms that decide what a card actually costs

Two cards can advertise a similar hourly rate and bill very differently. The difference is almost always in these clauses.

Daily minimums. Many programmes bill a minimum number of hours per flying day. On a provider with a two-hour daily minimum, a 55-minute leg from Dallas to Houston is billed as two hours. Cards reward long sectors and punish short ones, so a pattern of short hops is the worst use of one.

Flight hours are not block time. Ask which one you are billed on. Many programmes add taxi time at each end, commonly around twelve minutes out and twelve minutes in, so nearly half an hour can be billed per rotation before the aircraft has left the ground.

Federal Excise Tax. On domestic United States flights, and within 355 km of the border, Federal Excise Tax of 7.5 percent applies. Only about a third of United States card programmes quote rates with it already included, so it is a common reason a quote lands above the expected number.

Fuel surcharges and non-preferred FBOs. Both are usually in the contract and rarely in the headline rate. Using an FBO the programme has not contracted with can move the price of an otherwise identical trip.
