The working reference

How Ghana works for a private flight

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) issues both the overflight and the landing permit, and the process is the same for private and charter flights. An overflight permit takes 24 to 72 hours, about 24 working hours at best for an urgent or medical flight, and a landing permit two to three working days, although emergency premium processing can turn one round in a few hours. Both are valid for 72 hours. Operators with an active account file through the GCAA portal; everyone else files through an approved flight support agent. The office closes at weekends and on official public holidays. A non-scheduled landing permit needs the name and address of a local contact, charterer or agent in Ghana, a purpose-of-flight declaration, the passenger manifest and any cargo or arms details; a host letter is generally optional. A multi-stop trip needs one permit per landing. Requests are refused or delayed for paperwork errors, unpaid charges or too little notice. Ghana also sits on the West African routings: a Lagos to Abidjan flight needs Benin, Togo and Ghana overflight permits, and on one short-notice mission the desk rescued a Ghana permit through an alternate regional provider when the first failed, which is why it never relies on a single provider. Accra, Kotoka International (DGAA), is the international gateway. The desk files each Ghana permit with a backup provider ready and the local contact on the first request.

Questions

Ghana trip support questions

Who issues private jet permits in Ghana?

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) issues both the overflight and the landing permit, through its portal for operators with an account or through an approved flight support agent.

How far ahead should a Ghana overflight permit be filed?

Plan on 24 to 72 hours. An urgent or medical flight can be done in about 24 working hours. The office closes at weekends and on public holidays.

How long does a Ghana landing permit take?

Two to three working days. Emergency premium processing can turn one round in a few hours.

How long is a Ghana permit valid?

Both the overflight and the landing permit are valid for 72 hours.

Does Ghana need a local contact for a landing permit?

Yes. A non-scheduled landing permit needs the name and address of a local contact, charterer or agent in Ghana.

Does Ghana require a purpose-of-flight letter?

A formal purpose-of-flight declaration is required. An official host letter is generally optional.

Do I need a separate permit for each landing?

Yes. A multi-stop trip in Ghana needs one landing permit per landing.

Are charter and private flights filed differently in Ghana?

No. The overflight process is generally the same for private and non-scheduled charter flights.

Why does the desk keep a backup permit provider for Ghana?

Because a single provider can fail. On a short-notice mission the desk rescued a Ghana permit through an alternate regional provider when the first one did not come through.

What does the desk need to file a Ghana trip?

The aircraft details and documents, the schedule, the passenger manifest, any cargo details and a local contact in Ghana, at least three working days out. It comes back with each permit filed, a backup provider ready and handling confirmed in Accra.
