The working reference

How Africa works for a private flight

Africa is a permit desk with a fuel problem attached. Several states want overflight requests 72 hours before departure, Kenya wants a minimum of 72 working hours for a landing permit, and South Africa issues a standard permit in about three working days for eight passengers or fewer but a foreign operator's permit in fifteen to twenty working days for more, on notarised originals sent by courier. Morocco wants the flight plan filed at least six hours ahead, and the fix for a slipping passenger is to amend the time rather than refile. Permits fail when a single provider fails, so the desk keeps an alternate regional permit agent for every country, and fuel releases can go unrecognised on the ramp, so it carries a backup supplier release and pre-confirmed payment terms. Somalia is closed to US operators below FL260 by FAA rule and several European states warn against low-level overflight. Libya needs wartime insurance, daytime-only operation, a two-hour ground limit and a departure before 1600 local. Yellow fever certificates depend on where the flight departed, not the passenger's nationality. Egypt has its own guide below with the Cairo and Sphinx choice and the Red Sea fields. The desk files every permit with an alternate provider, doubles the fuel release, and briefs the airspace picture with the flight plan.

Permits and lead times

Overflight requests 72 hours ahead in several states, Kenya 72 working hours for a landing permit, South Africa about three working days for a standard permit and fifteen to twenty for a foreign operator's permit, Egypt about four business days. Every permit is filed with an alternate regional provider held in reserve.

Fuel

A fuel release can go unrecognised locally, so the desk carries a backup supplier release and pre-confirmed payment terms at every stop. Nairobi and Cairo are the reliable uplifts on the east; the interior is planned stop by stop.

Airspace

Somalia is closed to US operators and US-registered aircraft below FL260 by FAA rule, and the UK, Germany and France warn against low-level overflight. Libya needs wartime insurance, daytime-only operation, a two-hour ground limit and a departure before 1600 local, with no runway lights for a night departure. The desk checks ICAO state letters, NOTAMs, AIPs and EASA conflict zone bulletins for every routing.

Kenya

Landing permits with a minimum of 72 working hours, all passengers on a Kenyan electronic visa, landing and navigation charges by weight, parking free for the first hours then daily. Jomo Kenyatta for jets and international arrivals, Wilson for turboprops into the strips; both have their own guides.

South Africa

Eight passengers or fewer on a standard permit in about three working days; more than eight needs a foreign operator's permit in fifteen to twenty working days on notarised forms, a certified AOC, airworthiness, registration, insurance, noise, TCAS II, GPWS and RVSM, originals by courier. Lanseria needs no slots or PPR; Durban and Johannesburg do. Declare spares as aircraft stores. Yellow fever certificates follow the departure point.

Morocco, Ghana and West Africa

Morocco flight plans at least six hours ahead, with the time amended rather than refiled when passengers slip. A Ghana overflight permit was rescued through an alternate regional provider when the first failed; never rely on one. The desk files each state with the trip.

Egypt

Cairo International or Sphinx for the capital, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh and El Gouna for the Nile and the Red Sea, permits filed about four business days ahead, a technical and fuel stop between Europe, the Gulf and Africa. The Egypt guide below has the airports and the choice between them.

Questions

Africa trip support questions

How much notice does an African permit need?

Overflight requests 72 hours ahead in several states, Kenya 72 working hours for landing, South Africa three working days for a standard permit and fifteen to twenty for a foreign operator's permit, Egypt about four business days. The desk files each with an alternate provider in reserve.

Why does the desk carry two fuel releases in Africa?

Because a release can go unrecognised on the ramp. A backup supplier release and pre-confirmed payment terms at every stop keep the aircraft moving.

Can a US-registered aircraft overfly Somalia?

Not below FL260, by FAA rule, and several European states warn against low-level overflight. High-level transit on the published airways needs the permit and the current bulletins checked.

What does a flight into Libya need?

Wartime insurance, daytime-only operation, a two-hour ground limit and a departure before 1600 local; there are no runway lights. Benghazi, Tobruk and El Abrak are the fields.

What is South Africa's foreign operator's permit?

The permit needed for more than eight passengers, fifteen to twenty working days on notarised forms, a certified AOC, airworthiness, registration, insurance, noise, TCAS II, GPWS and RVSM, with originals sent by courier. Eight passengers or fewer use a standard permit in about three working days.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate?

It depends on where the flight departed, not on nationality, and the last six days of travel history are checked. The desk confirms it per passenger with the permit.

How do I file a flight plan for Morocco?

At least six hours before departure. If the passengers slip, amend the time rather than refile, which keeps the plan in the system.

Which Kenyan airport should a private jet use?

Jomo Kenyatta for jets and any trip that starts with an international arrival; Wilson for turboprops and light aircraft into the safari strips and the coast. Both clear customs at the aircraft.

Does Egypt have its own guide?

Yes, below: Cairo International or Sphinx for the capital, the Red Sea and Nile fields, the four-business-day permit and the nine Egypt airport guides.

What does the desk need to file an African trip?

Aircraft documents including insurance wording, the AOC where it applies, passenger and crew passports and visas, the stops and the dates at least a week out and longer for South Africa with more than eight passengers. It comes back with every permit filed twice, the fuel doubled and the routing checked.
