The guide
Passports are not required for entry if the passengers are citizens of the United States. However, upon the question of identity, proof of citizenship is needed. For foreigners, passports are mandatory to complete the process. The good news is that pets are welcome all over the region! Although, it is suggested to confirm with the hotels you plan to book.
The United States VI has two major airports. The Cyril E. King Airport operates around the clock every week, although the ATC runs from 7 AM to 10:30 PM. Interestingly, the airfield at CEK has one of the deepest constructed runways in the world. A new private jet hanger was introduced at St. Thomas in 2020, serving the Caribbean luxury FBO experience. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach the city of Charlotte Amalie.
On the other hand, the Henry E. Rohlson Airport in St. Croix recently completed an expansion of the terminal in December 2021. The airstrip operates 24 hours, and the ATC is open from 7 AM to 11 PM. The nearest city of Christiansted is about 20 minutes away by car.
Is an APIS necessary to fly to the United States Virgin Islands?
Depending on the flight origin, the necessity of an eAPIS confirmation varies. An eAPIS is not required if an aircraft flies from the United States to USVI, as it is considered a domestic flight. For departures from the USVI, the criteria are different. Flights outbound USVI require an eAPIS confirmation regardless of the inbound route.
For example, an eAPIS is mandatory during both inbound and outbound flights following the SBGR-TIST-KDFW route. Inversely, flying the KOPF-TIST-KDFW route allows entry through TIST without a filed eAPIS. However, on departure, it is deemed necessary. Information like this helps Icarus pre-plan flight support services that drive perfect results.

Questions
US Virgin Islands Flight Support: questions the desk gets
Do US citizens need a passport to fly to the US Virgin Islands?
No. Passports are not required for entry when passengers are US citizens, although proof of citizenship is needed if identity is questioned. Foreign nationals must carry passports to complete the process. Pets are welcome across the region, but confirm with the hotels you plan to book.
What are the operating hours at Cyril E. King Airport?
Cyril E. King on St. Thomas operates around the clock every day, although ATC runs from 7 AM to 10:30 PM. A new private jet hangar opened at St. Thomas in 2020 for the FBO experience, and the city of Charlotte Amalie is under ten minutes away.
What are the hours at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix?
The airstrip operates 24 hours, with ATC open from 7 AM to 11 PM. The airport completed an expansion of its terminal in December 2021. The nearest city, Christiansted, is about 20 minutes away by car, so ground transport should be arranged for passengers.
Is an eAPIS required for flights from the US to the USVI?
No. A flight from the United States to the US Virgin Islands is treated as a domestic flight, so no eAPIS confirmation is required on arrival. The requirement depends on where the flight originates, so departures from outside the United States are handled differently.
Is an eAPIS required when departing the US Virgin Islands?
Yes. Flights outbound from the USVI require an eAPIS confirmation regardless of the inbound route. For example, on the KOPF-TIST-KDFW routing an aircraft can enter TIST without a filed eAPIS, but one is required on departure back to the mainland.
When is eAPIS needed both inbound and outbound?
When the flight originates outside the United States. On the SBGR-TIST-KDFW routing, for instance, an eAPIS is mandatory for both the inbound and outbound legs. Knowing the origin in advance lets the flight support team pre-plan the filings and avoid delays.
