The route

Why fly private from Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh?

Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh is the weekend sector on our desk: 203 nautical miles, about 50 minutes in the air, and a landing ten minutes from Naama Bay at an airport built to handle presidents. Diving at Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran, the resort strip, Dahab and the St Catherine monastery inland all fly it, and so does the government and conference traffic that has made Sharm a summit city.

Why private works here

Leave Sphinx, 35 minutes from downtown Cairo, and land at Sharm with the car at the aircraft and the resort minutes away. No airline queue, no six-hour drive round the Gulf of Suez, and the return leaves when the weekend ends. For a family or a group of divers with equipment, the aircraft carries what the airline would charge for and loses.

Aircraft fit

At this distance a turboprop such as a King Air 350 carries eight in under an hour and is the right money for most families. A light jet does it in 40 minutes for six or seven. A midsize jet carries eight with full luggage and dive bags in a stand-up cabin, and is the choice when the same aircraft continues along the coast or back to Cairo the same evening. Both runways take all of them.

Advisor note

Sharm is an easy airport with a serious side. It handles the summits and the VIP movements, which means the handling, security and ramp arrangements are more developed than a resort field usually offers. What that costs you is nothing unless a summit is on: then parking tightens and the desk plans around it, so tell us the dates early.

Cost

What determines the cost of a Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh private jet charter?

A 50 minute sector is priced on the aircraft, the trip shape and how long the aircraft waits. These are the things that move the number on Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh.

01

Aircraft

A turboprop is the right money for up to eight on a short domestic leg. A light jet is quicker. A midsize jet earns its place for dive bags and luggage or for a same-day return.

02

Round trip or two one-ways

A weekend usually keeps the aircraft with you or brings it back for you on the day you choose. A longer stay is sometimes better as two one-way flights. The desk prices both.

03

The Egypt permit

Egypt requires a landing permit from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority for private and charter flights, domestic legs included. We plan on four business days and file it with the registration, insurance, AOC and crew details, and a specific stated purpose of flight. It is routine, and it is the one thing that cannot be fixed the day before.

04

Handling and parking

Handling at Sharm is through Egyptian Aviation Services and is arranged on every flight. Parking is normally easy and tightens only when a summit or conference is on, which the desk checks before it quotes.

05

The calendar

Sharm flies year round. The winter holiday weeks, the Egyptian public holidays and the summit dates are the tightest for aircraft out of Cairo and for ramp space. Those need firm bookings a couple of weeks ahead.

06

What the number covers

We tell you what the quote covers before you book and we hold the operator to the number we gave you. No surprises on the invoice is the point of using the desk.

Before you fly

What should I know before flying Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh?

It is a domestic flight, so there is no customs at either end. Bring passports or Egyptian ID; the crew checks them at the aircraft. You can arrive at the terminal fifteen to twenty minutes before departure.

Sharm El Sheikh International is the arrival. A 10,108 foot main runway with a second parallel runway, at 143 feet elevation with Category 9 fire cover, at the southern tip of the Sinai. Naama Bay is about ten minutes away and the main hotel strip fifteen to twenty. Dahab is up the coast and St Catherine inland. Private aircraft use a separate general aviation ramp and parking area away from the two airline terminals, with handlers based at Sharm such as Tiger Aviation and ZAS Aviation alongside Egyptian Aviation Services.

Diving equipment travels with you. A midsize jet carries eight with full dive bags; the desk confirms the hold space when it quotes. Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran are the reason most divers fly this sector, and the boats leave from the marina minutes from the airport.

On the Cairo side, Sphinx is the better private airport for most trips. A single 11,975 foot runway west of the city in Giza, open 24 hours with customs on site, no airport slot, no airline queue, about 35 minutes from downtown and materially cheaper to operate into. Cairo International in Heliopolis earns its place when you are connecting onto a scheduled flight, when the destination is the east of the city, or when the aircraft might need maintenance support, which Sphinx cannot provide. It is slot coordinated with mandatory handling, so the permit, slot and handling are filed together.

No time change and no customs. Sharm is on Egypt time, and an early departure from Sphinx has you on the water before lunch.

When to go

When is the best time to fly Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh?

Sharm flies year round: winter sun from November to March, the diving season through the spring and autumn, and summer for the sea. The winter holiday weeks and the Egyptian public holidays are the busiest for aircraft out of Cairo and for the resorts, and need firm dates a couple of weeks ahead. Allow four business days for the permit on any first trip.

Summit weeks are the other thing to plan around. When the city hosts a conference, ramp space tightens and the desk confirms parking before it confirms the aircraft. Outside those weeks a few days of notice is normal from Cairo.
