Before you fly
What should I know before flying Zurich to Geneva?
It is a domestic flight, so there is no customs at either end. Bring photo ID; the crew checks it at the aircraft. You can arrive at the general aviation terminal fifteen minutes before departure.
Geneva Cointrin is the arrival. One 12,795 foot runway at 1,411 feet elevation, four kilometres north west of the centre, with rail into the Swiss network from the terminal and a French sector for transfers to the French resorts. It is slot coordinated with prior permission and mandatory handling, departures are curfewed from 2126, and parking over three hours needs approval.
On the Zurich side, Zurich Airport is the departure. Nine kilometres north of the centre with a rail station inside the terminal, three runways up to 12,139 feet, Category 10 fire cover and full customs. It is slot coordinated, a private movement needs a slot like any other, and handling is mandatory through an approved agent. The night curfew is hard and it starts earlier for charter than most people expect: the latest allocated charter departure slot is 2145 CET, with no exceptions. Zurich rewards a schedule fixed early and punishes one that moves.
No time change. Both cities are on Central European time, so an 8 am departure from Zurich is on the ground at Cointrin before 9 am, and a 5 pm departure from Geneva has you home in Zurich for dinner, inside both curfews.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Zurich to Geneva?
This is a business sector and it flies year round. What moves is slot availability at both ends on the ski season weekends from December to April, during the Motor Show in March and EBACE in May, and around the big Geneva conferences. For those dates, give the desk firm dates weeks ahead so both slots and the Geneva parking are requested early.
