The Constraint

The weight penalty is the headline

Samedan combines the two conditions that penalise jet performance most: thin air and no room to spare. Field elevation is around 5,600 feet, the runway is 5,905 feet, and terrain surrounds the valley.

Density altitude routinely puts the effective performance figure well above the field elevation, particularly on a warm afternoon. The practical result is that many aircraft cannot depart at full fuel and full cabin.

Something has to give. Passengers, baggage, or fuel. Reducing fuel means a technical stop on the way out, and that changes the schedule, the crew duty and the cost.

This is not a detail to be resolved on the day of departure. It decides which aircraft is quoted in the first place, and getting it right at that stage is the difference between a trip that works and one that unravels on a warm February afternoon at 5,600 feet.

Operating

Crew qualification, permission and the approach

All crew are required to take the airport’s published briefing and be familiar with the approach procedures before arrival. That is a requirement rather than a suggestion, and it is one of the first things we confirm with an operator when a Samedan trip is proposed.

The let-down is challenging because of the topography and the climate, and considerably more so in winter, which is also the peak season. Approaches are non-precision and the terrain governs the procedure.

Prior permission is required. Ground handling is not mandatory, and there is an FBO on the field providing jet fuel, de-icing and international customs clearance. Jet A-1 and AVGAS are both available. Fire category should be confirmed for the specific operation rather than assumed from a standing figure.

The runway is 5,905 feet by 131 feet, 1,800 metres by 40, designated 03/21. At sea level that would be comfortable for most business jets. Here it is not, and the interaction with density altitude is the entire calculation.

The 2025 referendum and the rebuild

Samedan’s medium-term future was settled by a public vote. On 17 August 2025 the eleven municipalities of the Upper Engadine voted on contributing 38 million Swiss francs towards a 68.5 million franc modernisation of the airport, with the remaining 30.5 million coming from the federal government and the canton of Grisons.

The vote passed: 2,443 in favour, 54.36 per cent, against 2,051 opposed, on a turnout of 45.64 per cent. Rega, the Swiss air rescue service, is building a new base at the airport at its own expense as part of the expansion.

For an operator the significance is not that the airport changes. The elevation is not going to move and neither is the terrain. What a funded rebuild means is that the field’s status is settled, which matters if you are planning recurring Engadin traffic rather than a single trip.

History

One of five, chosen after the war

At the end of the Second World War the Swiss authorities set out to modernise a set of existing locations into regional airports, forming a second tier of infrastructure beneath the primary urban airports at Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern. Samedan was one of the five.

The purpose was practical rather than glamorous: to make travel into the mountain villages of the Engadin possible without a long journey by road or rail through Alpine passes. That the valley it serves would become St Moritz, and that the airport would end up handling large business jets at 5,600 feet, was not the original design brief.

It is owned and operated today by Engadin Airport AG.

Samedan and the Swiss fields

Switzerland is small, and the airport choice is almost always about ground time rather than flight time. Samedan is the exception, because here the aircraft decides before the geography does.

Zurich is the honest alternative when the aircraft or the crew do not qualify for Samedan, or when the departure performance would force a tech stop that defeats the purpose. It is a long drive to St Moritz, but it is a certain one. Lugano serves Ticino on the other side of the mountains. Geneva serves the western Alps. Buochs covers central Switzerland and Basel Mulhouse the north. Dubendorf is a Swiss Air Force base and not available for ordinary charter.
