The route

Why fly private from Zurich to Cairo?

Zurich to Cairo is the Egypt sector on the Swiss desk: 1467 nautical miles, about three and a half hours across the Alps and the Mediterranean, and a landing at the private airport in Giza rather than the airline hub in Heliopolis. Business between the two financial centres, the winter season on the Nile and the Red Sea, and the Gulf trips that stage through Cairo all fly it.

Why private works here

Leave Zurich from the general aviation terminal on the slot the desk filed, and be at Sphinx in Giza by early afternoon, 35 minutes from downtown and 23 miles from the Pyramids, with customs at the aircraft. The Swiss financial calendar and the Egyptian winter overlap neatly: a Friday departure inside the Zurich curfew, a weekend on the Nile, and the same aircraft on to Luxor or the Red Sea on the one permit file.

Aircraft fit

At 1467 nautical miles Zurich to Cairo is an hour shorter than the same trip from London, and that hour changes the quote. A super-midsize jet is the first quote for eight or nine: nonstop over the Alps and the Mediterranean with fuel in hand and a galley for three and a half hours. A heavy jet is the quote for a family of ten to twelve with winter luggage. A midsize jet reaches Sphinx from Zurich with a lighter load and is quoted once the winds are checked. Nothing lighter is quoted nonstop.

Advisor note

Two pieces of paper decide this trip. Zurich needs a slot for a private movement, and a charter departure has to be slotted by 2145 with no exceptions. Egypt needs a landing permit from the Civil Aviation Authority at four business days with a complete file. We file both the day you confirm. Sphinx then has no slot and runs 24 hours, which is why it is the Cairo airport we land at.

Cost

What determines the cost of a Zurich to Cairo private jet charter?

A three-and-a-half-hour international sector is priced on the aircraft, the trip shape, the slot and permit, the Cairo airport and the dates. These are the things that move the number on Zurich to Cairo.

01

Aircraft class

Super-midsize and heavy jets fly it nonstop from Zurich, and a midsize with a light load. On three and a half hours the super-midsize galley is enough for most parties; the heavy cabin is worth its price for a family with a fortnight of luggage.

02

Round trip or two one-ways

A winter break in Egypt from Zurich is usually two one-way legs, each planned inside the Zurich slot and curfew. A few days of meetings can keep the aircraft on the Sphinx ramp. The desk quotes both and tells you which comes out cleaner.

03

The Zurich slot and curfew

A private departure from Zurich needs a slot, requested as early as the dates are known, and handling through an approved agent. Charter departures must be slotted by 2145 CET. The desk files both with the trip and plans the return inside the curfew.

04

The Egypt permit

Egypt requires a landing permit from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority for private and charter flights, domestic legs included. We plan on four business days and file it with the registration, insurance, AOC and crew details, and a specific stated purpose of flight. It is routine, and it is the one thing that cannot be fixed the day before.

05

The Cairo airport

Sphinx, with no slot and a 24 hour field, is materially cheaper to operate into than Cairo International, where a slot and mandatory handling are added. The desk lands at Sphinx unless you are connecting or the aircraft needs maintenance cover. The choice moves the drive as well as the number.

06

What the number covers

We tell you what the quote covers before you book and we hold the operator to the number we gave you. No surprises on the invoice is the point of using the desk.

Before you fly

What should I know before flying Zurich to Cairo?

It is an international flight, so bring passports for everyone aboard. The desk files the crew and passenger details with the trip and confirms each passenger's entry requirements for Egypt before departure. Customs is cleared at the aircraft at both ends.

On the Cairo side, Sphinx is the better private airport for most trips. A single 11,975 foot runway west of the city in Giza, open 24 hours with customs on site, no airport slot, no airline queue, about 35 minutes from downtown and materially cheaper to operate into. Cairo International in Heliopolis earns its place when you are connecting onto a scheduled flight, when the destination is the east of the city, or when the aircraft might need maintenance support, which Sphinx cannot provide. It is slot coordinated with mandatory handling, so the permit, slot and handling are filed together.

On the Zurich side, Zurich Airport is the departure. Nine kilometres north of the centre with a rail station inside the terminal, three runways up to 12,139 feet, Category 10 fire cover and full customs. It is slot coordinated, a private movement needs a slot like any other, and handling is mandatory through an approved agent. The night curfew is hard and it starts earlier for charter than most people expect: the latest allocated charter departure slot is 2145 CET, with no exceptions. Zurich rewards a schedule fixed early and punishes one that moves.

You lose an hour on the way there. Egypt is an hour ahead of Central European time on both clocks. A 9 am departure from Zurich is on the ground at Sphinx around 1:30 pm local, with the afternoon in Cairo.

When to go

When is the best time to fly Zurich to Cairo?

October to April is the season, and from Zurich it doubles as the winter escape that is not a ski trip. The Christmas and February weeks are when Zurich slots and heavy jets both run short, so those dates want a couple of weeks of notice on top of the four business days the Egyptian permit takes.

In summer Cairo is hot, the airports are quiet and the Zurich slot is easier. Business flies year round, and a week of notice is comfortable from Zurich once the slot request and the permit are in.

Questions

Zurich to Cairo private jet questions

How long is a private jet flight from Zurich to Cairo?

About 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes in the air. The sector is 1467 nautical miles from Zurich to Sphinx. A heavy jet is at the quick end and a midsize jet at the slower end.

How far is Zurich from Cairo by air?

Egypt is an hour ahead of Zurich all year, so a three-and-a-half-hour block lands four and a half hours later on the local clock. Routing over the Alps and the Mediterranean and the winds on the day move the figure by a few minutes.

Which Cairo airport do private jets from Zurich use?

Sphinx, in Giza west of the city, for almost every trip from Zurich: no slot, open 24 hours, customs on the field, about 35 minutes from downtown and cheaper to land at. Cairo International in Heliopolis only when a passenger connects onto a scheduled flight or the aircraft might need maintenance, which Sphinx cannot provide.

Does Zurich need a slot for a private jet?

Yes. Every private movement at Zurich is slotted, with handling through an approved agent. Charter departures are slotted by 2145 CET.

Do I need a permit to fly a private jet to Egypt?

The operator does, and the desk files it. The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority requires a landing permit for private and charter flights, planned at four business days with a complete file, the same lead time as a Zurich slot requested early. Passengers bring passports and the desk confirms Egypt entry requirements for each nationality aboard.

Which aircraft is best for Zurich to Cairo?

A super-midsize jet, Challenger 350 or Gulfstream G280 class, for eight or nine is the first quote from Zurich, nonstop with margin. A heavy jet, Challenger 650 or Gulfstream G450 class, for a family of ten to twelve with winter luggage. A midsize jet, Citation XLS or Hawker 800 class, with a lighter load once the winds are checked.

Can I continue from Cairo to Luxor or the Red Sea on the same aircraft?

Yes, and from Zurich it is the usual shape of a winter trip. One Egyptian permit covers the international arrival and the domestic legs, so Cairo, Luxor, Aswan or the Red Sea fly on the same aircraft as a single itinerary. The desk quotes the whole trip as one number and plans the return inside the Zurich curfew.

What determines the cost of a Zurich to Cairo private jet?

The aircraft class, whether the trip is two one-way flights or a round trip, the Zurich slot and handling, the Egyptian permit, which Cairo airport, and the dates against the October to April season. We tell you what the quote covers before you book.

Yes, it is an international flight. Customs and immigration are cleared at the aircraft at both ends, and the crew checks passports before departure. There is no airline security line.

What is the time difference between Zurich and Cairo?

One hour all year. Egypt is UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer; Zurich is UTC+1 and UTC+2 on the same dates, so the gap holds on both clocks. In practice a 9 am departure from Zurich is on the ground at Sphinx around 1:30 pm local, and you gain the hour back on the return.

How much notice do I need to book Zurich to Cairo?

Four business days for the Egyptian permit, with the Zurich slot requested the same day. Outside the winter holidays a week from Zurich is comfortable; for Christmas and February give the desk a couple of weeks. With permit and slot held, an aircraft can be off Zurich within about three hours of the call, inside the 0600 to 2200 window.
