Aircraft fit
At this distance the aircraft barely matters and the slots do. A turboprop such as a King Air 350 carries eight in about 45 minutes at the lowest cost. A light jet flies it in half an hour with six or seven aboard and is the usual answer. A midsize jet earns its place for eight with luggage or when Milan is the first stop of an Italian week. Linate takes all three; the heavy end of the fleet uses Malpensa.

Milan is two airports and one question: where are you going? Linate is the city airport, seven kilometres from the Duomo, with a runway that suits everything up to the midsize end of the fleet. Malpensa is the long-runway hub 49 kilometres out, right for the largest aircraft and for the lakes. Zurich needs its slot and its 2145 charter cut-off for the departure; the Milan end needs handling, and on fashion week and Salone dates, a parking plan.

What should I know before flying Zurich to Milan?
It is an international flight, so bring passports for everyone aboard. The desk files the crew and passenger details with the trip and confirms each passenger's entry requirements for Italy before departure. Customs is cleared at the aircraft at both ends.
Linate is the city airport. About seven kilometres east of the centre with a runway of about 8,012 feet, customs at the aircraft and handling arranged with the trip. It suits light and midsize jets and puts you in the centre in twenty minutes. Malpensa, 49 kilometres north west with two runways of about 12,861 feet, takes the largest aircraft and is the better landing for Lake Maggiore and the north.
On the Zurich side, Zurich Airport is the departure. Nine kilometres north of the centre with a rail station inside the terminal, three runways up to 12,139 feet, Category 10 fire cover and full customs. It is slot coordinated, a private movement needs a slot like any other, and handling is mandatory through an approved agent. The night curfew is hard and it starts earlier for charter than most people expect: the latest allocated charter departure slot is 2145 CET, with no exceptions. Zurich rewards a schedule fixed early and punishes one that moves.
No time change. Zurich and Milan are both on Central European time, so an 8 am departure from Zurich is on the ground at Linate before 9 am, and a 6 pm departure from Milan has you home in Zurich for dinner, inside the curfew.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Zurich to Milan?
This is a business sector and it flies year round. What moves is Zurich slot availability and Linate parking during the fashion weeks in February and September, the Salone del Mobile in April and the big summer weekends. Those weeks want firm dates a week or two ahead so the Linate parking is held.
Outside those weeks, a day or two of notice is normal once the Zurich slot request is in, and the desk often manages a same-day departure for a light jet or turboprop when the paperwork is already filed.
