How South Africa works for a private flight
South Africa splits its permits between two offices. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) issues the overflight permit, usually in 24 to 48 working hours and valid for 24 hours, and a private overflight needs little more than the flight schedule. The Department of Transport issues the landing permit, and the desk plans on five to seven business days, up to ten for a commercial or complex trip. One landing permit covers a whole multi-stop itinerary when it is filed as one continuous schedule. The landing request needs a purpose-of-flight letter or local sponsor confirmation, the passenger manifest with passport details, the crew list with licences and medicals, the aircraft certificates, the handling confirmation and the parking approval. Charter is different: a commercial flight, or any flight with more than eight passengers, needs a foreign operator permit, which takes fifteen to twenty working days on documents certified by a commissioner of oaths and sent as originals, so the desk starts a month out. Both offices close at weekends and on public holidays. In Johannesburg, Lanseria (FALA) needs no slot or PPR outside peak events and O.R. Tambo (FAOR) is slotted; King Shaka (FALE) in Durban needs PPR and slot coordination for some operations. All three run customs, immigration and quarantine around the clock. Yellow fever certificates follow the departure point, and spares on board are declared as aircraft stores. The desk files the SACAA and DoT permits together, starts the FOP early when it applies, and books the slot where the airport needs one.
Overflight
Overflight permits
Issued by the SACAA, usually in 24 to 48 working hours, and an urgent request can sometimes be secured the same day during office hours. Valid for 24 hours. A private overflight needs the flight schedule rather than the full aircraft document set, unless the aircraft carries dangerous goods. A local agent is the practical route; direct filing works when an advance deposit is held with the authority.
Landing
Landing permits
Issued by the Department of Transport. Plan on five to seven business days, up to ten for a commercial or complex trip; the permit is tied to the approved schedule, typically within about 72 hours of the requested arrival. One permit covers a multi-stop itinerary filed as one continuous schedule. It needs a purpose-of-flight letter or local sponsor confirmation, the manifest with passports, crew licences and medicals, the certificates of registration, airworthiness and insurance, handling confirmation and parking approval, and the passengers' electronic traveller declarations.
Over 8 passengers
Charter and the foreign operator permit
A commercial flight needs commercial clearance, and a flight with more than eight passengers needs a foreign operator permit (FOP): fifteen to twenty working days once the file is complete, on the TV2 and SACAA forms, notarised, with certified copies of the AOC, airworthiness, registration, maintenance release, insurance, noise, TCAS II, GPWS, RVSM and radio licence, couriered rather than scanned. Plan a month.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg and Durban
Lanseria (FALA) needs no slot or PPR outside peak events; international arrivals clear at the main terminal before repositioning. O.R. Tambo (FAOR), the busiest airport, runs 24 hours and needs slots. King Shaka (FALE) in Durban needs PPR and slot coordination for some operations. All three clear customs, immigration and quarantine 24/7. The South Africa crew guide has the detail.
Fuel and spares
Fuel, parking and spares
Fuel supply at the main airports has been stable, with large-cabin aircraft fuelled on the main apron. Parking is ample except during major events, when Durban and Johannesburg ramps fill. Spare parts on board are declared to customs as aircraft stores that stay with the aircraft, so they are not treated as imports.
Health
Health and entry
Yellow fever certificates depend on where the flight departed, not on nationality, and the last six days of travel are checked. A flight from the United States needs none. Both permit offices close at weekends and on public holidays, so a Monday arrival is filed the week before.

Questions
South Africa trip support questions
Who issues private jet permits in South Africa?
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) issues the overflight permit and the Department of Transport issues the landing permit. A charter flight or one with more than eight passengers also needs a foreign operator permit.
How far ahead should a South Africa landing permit be filed?
Plan on five to seven business days, and up to ten for a commercial or complex trip. Both offices close at weekends and on public holidays.
How quickly can an overflight permit be issued?
Usually in 24 to 48 working hours. An urgent request can sometimes be secured the same day through a local agent during office hours.
What is a foreign operator permit?
The permit for commercial flights and for flights carrying more than eight passengers. It takes fifteen to twenty working days once the file is complete, on notarised forms and certified copies of the aircraft and operator documents, sent as originals by courier.
Does one landing permit cover several stops?
Yes. A single Department of Transport permit covers a multi-stop or multi-day itinerary when it is filed as one continuous schedule with the arrival and departure points.
Does South Africa need a purpose-of-flight letter?
Yes. The landing permit needs a clear purpose-of-flight letter or local sponsor confirmation, with the manifest, crew credentials, aircraft certificates and handling confirmation.
Which Johannesburg airport should a private jet use?
Lanseria (FALA) for most private flights: no slot or PPR outside peak events and customs at the main terminal. O.R. Tambo (FAOR) is the busiest airport, runs 24 hours and needs slots.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for South Africa?
Only if the flight departs from, or the passengers recently travelled through, a country on South Africa's yellow fever list. The last six days of travel are checked; a flight from the United States needs none.
How should spare parts on board be declared?
As aircraft stores that stay with the aircraft. Declaring them that way keeps them out of import procedures.
What does the desk need to file a South Africa trip?
The manifest with passport details, the crew list with licences and medicals, the aircraft certificates, the purpose of the flight, and the number of passengers, at least a week out, or a month for a foreign operator permit. It comes back with both permits filed, the FOP started where it applies, and handling, parking and slots confirmed.
