What should I know before flying Athens to Naxos?
No customs on the leg and none on the island. Athens to Naxos is domestic, so passports or EU ID at the aircraft is the whole formality. Naxos is domestic only, so an international arrival clears Athens and the Caravan or the helicopter takes it on.
Naxos Island National Airport is an airstrip. A single 2,953 foot runway at sea level about three kilometres south of Naxos town at Agios Prokopios, domestic only, with no jet fuel and no customs. It takes a Caravan and similar light aircraft and helicopters, and nothing bigger. Paros, twenty minutes away by boat, has the 4,593 foot runway a King Air needs. An international arrival lands at Athens first.
On the Athens side, the helicopter lifts from Athens International or from Megara. Athens International is where an arriving jet parks and where most island helicopters load, 20 miles east of the city at Spata, under a Level 3 slot with mandatory handling. Megara, the Army helicopter base west of the city with a civil apron, takes helicopters and light aircraft by day with no permission needed and is the quieter lift for a trip that starts in Athens itself. Tatoi and Elefsis are military fields closed to visiting aircraft, whatever the map suggests.
The Caravan takes the bags, the helicopter takes the people. Light luggage on the helicopter for a villa landing, proper suitcases on the Caravan into the airstrip, and the desk writes the allowance for the type into the quote.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Athens to Naxos?
Naxos runs May to October. July and August are the tightest weeks for helicopters and light aircraft out of Athens and for the villas on Naxos, and book weeks ahead. May, June, September and October give the same island with easier availability and, in September, a warmer sea and the meltemi easing.
Out of season Naxos is quieter still, a few days of notice is enough, and the Caravan still carries its return fuel because the airstrip never stocks any.
