A helicopter needs none of it, arrives over the caldera, and lands at the hotel if the hotel has a pad. When no jet slot can be had, a jet to Athens and a helicopter onward is a genuine plan, not a fallback.

What should I know before flying Athens to Santorini by helicopter?
Domestic on the flight, customs at Athens. Athens to Santorini crosses no border, so the crew checks passports or EU ID at the helicopter and that is all. A jet from abroad clears customs at Athens International before the helicopter lifts, which is the plan whenever no Santorini slot can be had.
Santorini Airport is shared with the Air Force and slotted. A 7,208 foot runway at 127 feet with Category 7 fire cover, IATA Level 3 slots, prior permission, mandatory handling and, in season, a forty-minute maximum on the ground between 0500Z and 1800Z with no parking. A jet drops you and flies to Athens, about 40 minutes away. A helicopter lands at the airport helipad or, with the hotel's approval, on the rim.
On the Athens side, the helicopter lifts from Athens International or from Megara. Athens International is where an arriving jet parks and where most island helicopters load, 20 miles east of the city at Spata, under a Level 3 slot with mandatory handling. Megara, the Army helicopter base west of the city with a civil apron, takes helicopters and light aircraft by day with no permission needed and is the quieter lift for a trip that starts in Athens itself. Tatoi and Elefsis are military fields closed to visiting aircraft, whatever the map suggests.
Pack for the helicopter, not the hotel. Light luggage for four on the single-engine, more on the twin, and the allowance for the type is written into the quote. Heavy bags from a jet arrival into Athens can follow by ferry while the helicopter takes the people over the caldera.

When is the best time to fly Athens to Santorini?
