Mykonos to Syros Helicopter Charter: Mykonos to Syros by private aircraft

Mykonos to Syros
Helicopter Charter

Mykonos to Syros is about 12 minutes by helicopter, 19 nautical miles from the Mykonos airport pad or a beach club helipad to the administrative capital of the Cyclades, with Ermoupoli's neoclassical harbour and its own small airport. Syros to Mykonos is the same sector flown the other way. Helicopters on the islands fly sunrise to sunset and are limited by weight rather than seats, and the desk secures the landing before it quotes. Same time zone at both ends.

The route

Why fly from Mykonos to Syros?

Mykonos to Syros is a 19 nautical mile hop on the Mykonos desk, about 12 minutes by helicopter, due west over Delos and Rhenia to the island the Cyclades are run from. Ermoupoli is the administrative capital of the group, a neoclassical harbour town with an opera house, shipyards and a working population that does not leave in October, and Syros is one of the few Mykonos hops that ends at a runway rather than a pad. Syros Island National Airport sits about three kilometres south east of the town, so the sector is flown two ways: a helicopter to the airport apron or a private pad, or a light aircraft airport to airport.

Why the helicopter works here

Lift from Mykonos from the airport pad, where an arriving jet has dropped you, or from a beach club helipad with the venue's approval, and be at Syros airport about 12 minutes later with the taxi into Ermoupoli a few minutes more. The boat is honest competition on this pair, 25 to 30 minutes on a Seajets fast ferry and about 45 minutes on Blue Star, both into the harbour at Ermoupoli, but the ferry starts at the Mykonos port and the helicopter starts wherever you are. The helicopter also flies back to a beach club pad, which no boat does.

Helicopter or aircraft

A single-engine helicopter carries four with light luggage and a twin-engine six to eight with more, and both land on the apron at Syros or on a private pad with approval. The runway at Syros, 3,542 feet with Category 4 fire cover, takes a King Air or Caravan turboprop airport to airport with proper luggage and, in favourable conditions, a very light jet, but nothing from the business jet fleet in general. A jet parked at Athens is therefore a turboprop or a helicopter away from Syros, and the desk quotes whichever suits the bags and the day.

Advisor note

The Mykonos rule still shapes this sector: a jet gets about forty minutes on the ground there in season and nowhere to park, so the passengers leave by helicopter. Syros adds a rule of its own. The airport is prior-permission with mandatory handling and a small apron, so every movement, helicopter or turboprop, is filed with the handler before the crew plans the day, and the desk does that before it quotes. Daylight closes the helicopter option at sunset, but the ferries from Ermoupoli run back to Mykonos all year.

Cost

What determines the cost of a Mykonos to Syros helicopter charter?

A twelve minute sector that can end at a runway is priced on the aircraft, the two landings, the shape of the day and the dates. This is what moves the number on Mykonos to Syros.

01

Helicopter or turboprop

A single-engine helicopter for four, a twin-engine for six to eight, or a King Air or Caravan airport to airport for a group with bags. Syros is one of the few Mykonos hops where the turboprop is a real option, because it has a runway, and the desk quotes the aircraft that suits the luggage.

02

The landings

A landing at Syros airport is a prior-permission movement with mandatory handling, and the desk files it. A villa or hotel pad on Syros needs the owner's approval, a beach club pad on Mykonos needs the venue's, and the Mykonos airport pad carries handling. Each is secured and shown before you book.

03

Day trip or one way

A day in Ermoupoli keeps the helicopter with you at the airport, subject to daylight, and is priced as the pair of legs plus the waiting. A one-way drop is quoted on its own, and because the ferry runs all year, some passengers fly out and sail back.

04

The dates

July and August tighten the helicopters out of Mykonos and the apron at Syros, and book four to six weeks ahead. Syros works in April and October too, when the rest of the hub is quiet, and a few days of notice is usually enough outside the season.

05

What the number covers

We tell you what the quote covers before you book and we hold the operator to the number we gave you. No surprises on the invoice is the point of using the desk.

Aircraft

Which aircraft flies Mykonos to Syros?

Three answers cover almost every Mykonos to Syros trip, and the third exists because Syros has a runway.

Single-engine

Airbus H130 and H125 class

Four passengers with light luggage, about 12 minutes from the Mykonos airport pad or a beach club to the apron at Syros or a private pad, and the usual aircraft for a couple or a day in Ermoupoli.

AirborneAbout 12 min
Twin-engine

Airbus H145, H135 and AW109 class

Six to eight passengers with more luggage and two engines for the short crossing past Delos, the answer for a family or a group arriving for a stay.

Passengers6 to 8
AirborneAbout 12 min
Turboprop

King Air and Caravan class

Six to eight passengers with proper luggage, airport to airport into the 3,542 foot runway at Syros in about 10 minutes. The runway and Category 4 fire cover keep the field to turboprops and a very light jet in favourable conditions.

Before you fly

What should I know before flying Mykonos to Syros?

It is a domestic sector, so there is no customs at either end. The crew checks a passport or EU identity card at the aircraft. On a helicopter bags are weighed rather than counted; on the turboprop there is room for proper luggage, which is often the reason to fly it airport to airport.

Mykonos Airport is the drop-off. A single 6,244 foot runway at 405 feet, Level 3 slots requested no earlier than 14 days out with the airlines ahead of you, prior permission, mandatory handling, and about forty minutes on the ground with no parking from May to September. The helicopter pad at the airport, or a club pad at Ornos, Kalo Livadi or Scorpios, is where the Syros leg lifts from once the jet has gone to park in Athens.

Syros Island National Airport is small, prior-permission and about three kilometres from town. Runway 18/36 is 1,080 metres, about 3,542 feet by 98 feet, at 236 feet elevation with Category 4 fire cover, and the field is named for Dimitrios Vikelas, the first president of the International Olympic Committee. Handling is mandatory, the apron is small and parking is confirmed in advance. Helicopters land on the apron, and Ermoupoli is a few minutes by taxi to the north west.

Daylight and the wind on a short crossing. The crossing is short, but the meltemi still decides the lift: a strong northerly afternoon in July or August can hold a helicopter at a Mykonos club pad, and mornings are calmer. Helicopters fly sunrise to sunset; if the light goes, the year-round ferry from Ermoupoli is the fallback the desk will tell you about.

When to go

When is the best time to fly Mykonos to Syros?

Syros flies year round, because it is a working capital rather than a resort. Ermoupoli keeps its restaurants, the opera house and its harbour life through the winter, so an April or October day trip from Mykonos makes sense here when the rest of the hub is closed. In July and August the airport permission, the apron and the helicopters all need a few weeks of notice.

Book four to six weeks ahead for July and August. Outside the season a few days is comfortable, and the desk will tell you if the ferry back is the better second leg.

Questions

Mykonos to Syros helicopter questions

How long is a helicopter flight from Mykonos to Syros?

About 7 to 17 minutes depending on the helicopter and the wind, on a track of 19 nautical miles west over Delos from the Mykonos airport pad to Syros airport or a private pad. A turboprop does it airport to airport in about 10 minutes. The fast ferry takes 25 to 30 minutes and Blue Star about 45, harbour to harbour.

Can I fly Syros to Mykonos on the same page?

Yes. Syros to Mykonos is the same sector flown east, from the airport apron or your pad to the Mykonos airport pad for a jet's slot or to a beach club pad for the afternoon. The desk quotes it with the outbound or on its own, and because the ends are minutes apart the helicopter usually waits at Syros.

Where does the helicopter leave from on Mykonos?

From the helipad at Mykonos Airport, where the jet has dropped you, or from a club pad at Ornos, Kalo Livadi or Scorpios with the venue's approval. On the Syros pair the club pad is the usual lift for a day trip, because the airport lift only makes sense when you are already there with the jet, and the return lands you back at the pad.

Can a jet land at Syros?

Only a very light jet in favourable conditions. Runway 18/36 is 3,542 feet with Category 4 fire cover, which limits the field to turboprops and a handful of the smallest jets. A midsize or larger jet lands at Mykonos for its forty minutes or at Athens, and the last leg to Syros is a helicopter or a King Air.

Is Syros a summer island?

It is a year-round town, which is the appeal. Ermoupoli is the seat of the Cyclades administration, with the opera house, the shipyards, the neoclassical harbour front and restaurants that stay open through the winter, so the sector flies in months when Mykonos itself has emptied and the other island pads are shut.

Which helicopter is best for Mykonos to Syros?

A single-engine H130 or H125 class for four with light luggage is the usual answer for a couple or a day in Ermoupoli. A twin-engine H145, H135 or AW109 class carries six to eight with more bags. For a group with real luggage the answer is a King Air or Caravan airport to airport, which Syros can take because it has a runway.

Can the helicopter wait on Syros for a day trip?

Yes, subject to daylight. The desk prices the day as the two legs plus the waiting time, and the helicopter stays on the apron at Syros, where parking is limited and confirmed with the handler in advance, or returns to Mykonos and comes back at the time you set, with a margin before sunset.

Is there a ferry from Mykonos to Syros?

Yes, all year and daily on Blue Star, about 45 minutes and up to an hour and twenty on a conventional boat, and 25 to 30 minutes on a Seajets fast ferry in season, into the harbour at Ermoupoli. It is the honest comparison for this pair, and the helicopter wins on the door-to-door from a villa or a jet, not on the water time alone.

What determines the cost of a Mykonos to Syros charter?

The aircraft, helicopter or turboprop, whether it is a one-way drop or a day with waiting, the landings, meaning the Syros airport permission and handling or a private pad fee plus the Mykonos pad, and the dates against July and August. The quote lists all of it before you book.

Can the helicopter fly after dark?

No. Helicopters on the Greek islands fly sunrise to sunset, so a dinner in Ermoupoli means an overnight on Syros or the ferry back, which runs to Mykonos all year, in about 45 minutes on Blue Star. Tell the desk your plan and it quotes the shape that works, including a helicopter out and a boat home.

How much luggage can I take?

By weight on a helicopter: light bags for four on a single-engine and more on a twin-engine, with the desk confirming the allowance once it has the passengers and the bags. If the luggage is the problem, Syros is the hop where a turboprop airport to airport solves it, at the cost of using the airport at both ends rather than a club pad on Mykonos.

How much notice do I need to book Mykonos to Syros?

Four to six weeks in July and August, when the helicopters out of Mykonos, the apron at Syros and the Mykonos slot for the jet's drop-off, which opens only 14 days out, all tighten. Outside the season Syros is one of the easiest pairs on the desk and a few days is comfortable, with the airport permission filed with the handler.
