The Airport

Syros at a glance

Syros, named for Dimitrios Vikelas, carries the ICAO code LGSO and the identifier JSY. A single 3,542 foot runway at 236 feet elevation with ICAO Category 4 fire cover, serving Ermoupoli, the administrative capital of the Cyclades.

It is a small domestic field with PPR and mandatory handling, and it is turboprop territory.

The Constraint

The runway decides everything

18/36 is 1,080 metres, about 3,542 feet, by 98 feet, with Category 4 fire cover. That limits Syros to turboprops and a handful of very light jets in favourable conditions. It is not a field for the business jet fleet in general, and we would rather say so at the quote than fly to Mykonos and explain on arrival.

PPR applies and handling is mandatory. The apron is small and parking should be confirmed in advance. Customs for an international arrival is unusual and must be arranged.

Instead

Mykonos and a ferry, or a helicopter

For any jet, the answer is Mykonos with the ferry onward, about an hour, or a helicopter from Athens or Mykonos, which avoids the runway question entirely and is how most private travellers reach Syros.

Syros direct is right only for a turboprop or very light jet, and for those it is the natural field for a working island town with fine neoclassical architecture and a growing following.

History

A 1992 field for the capital of the Cyclades

The airport opened in 1992 to connect Ermoupoli, the administrative capital of the Cyclades, to Athens, and is named for Dimitrios Vikelas, the writer with Syros roots who was the first president of the International Olympic Committee.

It has remained a small domestic field, which is precisely what it was built to be.

Nearby

Syros and the Greek fields

Greece is an Athens operation with islands attached. Syros is the smallest field we cover.

Mykonos is the jet gateway with a ferry or helicopter onward. Paros takes light jets on a longer runway. Santorini and Athens for the rest. Skiathos, Zakynthos and Kalamata serve other regions.

Questions

Syros, answered

Can private jets land at Syros?

Only the smallest. Syros has a 3,542 foot runway with ICAO Category 4 fire cover, which limits it to turboprops and a handful of very light jets in favourable conditions. It is not a field for the business jet fleet in general, and we say so rather than quote a landing that will not happen.

How long is the runway at Syros?

18/36 is 1,080 metres, about 3,542 feet, by 98 feet, in asphalt, at 236 feet elevation. Fire cover is Category 4. Both figures place it firmly in turboprop territory.

Does Syros need prior permission?

Yes, PPR applies and handling is mandatory. It is not IATA Level 3 coordinated in the way the larger islands are, but the small apron means capacity is genuinely limited.

Why would you fly to Syros?

Because Ermoupoli, the Cyclades administrative capital, and the island itself are the destination. It is a working Greek island town rather than a resort, with fine neoclassical architecture and a growing following. For anyone going there on a turboprop it is the field; for anyone on a jet it is Mykonos and a ferry.

Syros or Mykonos?

Mykonos for any jet, with the ferry or a helicopter onward to Syros, about an hour by boat. Syros direct only on a turboprop or very light jet that the runway and fire category permit.

Is there a helicopter option for Syros?

Yes. A jet to Athens or Mykonos and a helicopter onward is the practical answer for most private travellers to Syros, and it avoids the runway question entirely.

Is ground handling mandatory at Syros?

Yes, through the handler on the field, arranged with the PPR. Jet A-1 is available.

Do you need a permit to fly a private jet into Greece?

No separate landing permit for EU and most third-country private operations, but the PPR at Syros is a hard requirement and customs must be arranged for an international arrival, which is unusual here.

Can you park at Syros?

The apron is small and parking is limited. For a turboprop stay it should be confirmed in advance.

What is the history of Syros airport?

The airport opened in 1992 to connect the administrative capital of the Cyclades to Athens, and is named for Dimitrios Vikelas, the Syros-connected writer who was the first president of the International Olympic Committee. It has remained a small domestic field.

What time zone is Greece in?

Eastern European Time, EET in winter and EEST in summer, which is UTC+2 and UTC+3 respectively.

Tell us the aircraft. If it is a turboprop or very light jet we file the PPR and handling. If it is anything larger we plan Mykonos plus ferry or Athens plus helicopter from the start, because that is what will actually fly.
