Charter routes

Where can you fly privately across Italy?

Italy is a country desk rather than a city desk, with five origins and the Costa Smeralda at its centre. Each origin has its own field: Ciampino for Rome with Fiumicino for connections, Peretola for Florence, Linate for Milan with Malpensa for the largest aircraft and the lakes, Olbia Costa Smeralda for Sardinia, and Nice Cote d'Azur for the Riviera end of the Olbia run. The first decision on every trip is the constraint at the field, because Florence's short runway keeps it to light jets and turboprops, Linate is slotted with limited parking, and Olbia in August is one of the busiest private airports in the Mediterranean, so parking is confirmed before the aircraft moves. What flies from here falls into four kinds of sector: the Rome runs to Naples, Milan, Olbia, London and Paris, the Florence runs to Geneva, Milan, Nice and Paris, the Milan runs to Geneva, Olbia and London, and the Sardinia and Riviera sectors between Olbia, Geneva, Zurich and Nice. The fifteen routes below are the ones the desk quotes most, and each opens to its own guide with the flight time, the distance, the aircraft that fit and the airports at both ends.

Tuscany with Tenuta Torciano

The four-day Tuscany retreat

In 2022 Icarus Jet and Tenuta Torciano, the San Gimignano winery founded in 1720, ran a four-day retreat built around private flying: a jet into Florence from New York, London, Cairo or Dubai, a helicopter from the airport over the city to a castle residence, a tour over Siena, the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia, a Ferrari drive through Montalcino, and a private tasting and cellar lunch with the winery's owner.

How the desk flies it

Florence Peretola's short runway keeps the jet to light types and turboprops, so the desk sizes the aircraft to the runway before the passengers and books the helicopter with the jet, so the transfer to San Gimignano leaves as the passengers clear the terminal. The same shape works for any Tuscan estate, and the desk builds it on request.

Capri and the coast

Reaching the islands the desk flies most

Capri

Capri has no airport. The way in is Naples, Capodichino for a jet with Salerno as the alternate, then about ten minutes by helicopter to the Capri heliport at Damecuta, or the sea from Molo Beverello, about fifty minutes on the hydrofoil. The desk books the helicopter with the jet and holds the boat as the fallback, because the heliport closes when the afternoon wind gets up.

The Capri season

May to September, with August the month the island fills. Helicopter slots and the boat both want booking with the jet, and a July or August arrival is planned around the midday wind and the last lift before dusk, since the helicopters do not fly at night.

Italy charter route questions

Which Rome airport do private flights use?

Ciampino, the Rome business aviation airport 15 kilometres south east of the centre, for almost every trip. Fiumicino when you are connecting from a scheduled flight or the aircraft is too large for Ciampino.

Can a private jet fly from Florence?

Yes. Peretola is four kilometres from the centre with a 5,741 foot runway, and it takes light jets and turboprops. A midsize jet with a full load uses Pisa or Bologna, and the desk says when that is the better plan.

Which Milan airport do private flights use?

Linate, the city airport seven kilometres from the centre, for most trips, under a slot with limited parking. Malpensa, 49 kilometres north west, for the largest aircraft and for the lakes.

How long are the Italian sectors?

From about 30 minutes for Rome to Naples to about two and a half hours for Rome to London. Milan, Olbia, Geneva and Nice are 40 minutes to an hour and a quarter from the Italian cities; Paris about two hours.

Why is Olbia parking confirmed first?

Because Olbia Costa Smeralda in July and August is one of the busiest private airports in the Mediterranean. The desk confirms parking before the aircraft moves or prices a repositioning to Cagliari or the mainland from the start.

Do the Italian routes need permits?

No national permit within Italy, France or the EU. Switzerland and the United Kingdom are customs borders, so passports are checked at the aircraft, and the UK needs the Electronic Travel Authorisation for visa-exempt nationals. Slots and parking apply at Linate, Geneva, Zurich and the London fields.

Is there customs on a Rome to Milan flight?

No. It is a domestic flight within Italy. Bring passports or EU ID for the crew to check, and arrive at the general aviation terminal fifteen minutes before departure.

Can the helicopter to Capri be on the same booking?

Yes. The desk books the helicopter from Naples Capodichino to the Capri heliport or an approved pad on the Amalfi coast as part of the same itinerary and shows it on the same quote.

How much notice does an Italian sector need?

A few days is normal outside the peaks. Give the desk firm dates weeks ahead for the fashion and design weeks at Linate, Ferragosto and August at Olbia and Nice, and the Christmas weeks.

Can I fly the reverse direction?

Yes. Every route page covers both directions, and the desk quotes the return sector the same way, with the aircraft chosen for the shorter runway at either end.
