Al Bateen
Executive Airport
The Middle East’s only dedicated business aviation airport, six and a half miles from central Abu Dhabi. No airline schedule to fit around. Slot coordinated, and the declared runway is 1,800 feet shorter than the pavement.

The Airport
Al Bateen at a glance
Al Bateen carries the ICAO code OMAD and the identifier AZI. It sits about 6.5 nautical miles southeast of central Abu Dhabi and is operated by Abu Dhabi Airports.
It is a dedicated business aviation airport, not an international airport with an executive terminal attached. It is the only field of its kind in the Middle East, and that is the fact everything else on this page follows from.
Why it exists
An airport that kept its runway and lost its airlines
Al Bateen was Abu Dhabi’s original international airport. When Zayed International opened and took the scheduled traffic, Al Bateen was not closed. It was repurposed as a dedicated executive field.
That inheritance is why a business aviation airport has 10,505 feet of pavement and airport-scale infrastructure. Very few purpose-built executive fields anywhere have this much runway, and almost none sit this close to a capital city centre.
The practical effect is that there is no airline schedule to fit around. At every other UAE airport in this library, private movements are fitted between scheduled operations. Here they are the operation. On a short turnaround, that is worth more than any single facility.
Bombardier is building a 120,000 square foot service facility at the field, due to open in 2026. Heavy maintenance capability from a major manufacturer, on a dedicated business aviation airport rather than squeezed in beside airline traffic, is a meaningful addition for the region.
The Constraints
Two things the published data gets wrong
Al Bateen is slot coordinated. The slot must be applied for before arrival. This matters because the data most operators work from lists Al Bateen as requiring no prior permission, and that is not the position. We treat it as a coordinated field and file early.
The declared runway is materially shorter than the pavement. The published runway is 10,505 feet. The declared takeoff run available is 8,698 feet, roughly 1,800 feet less. For most business aircraft that is still comfortable, but on a hot Abu Dhabi afternoon with a heavy departure it is a large enough gap to change the calculation, and it belongs in the performance figures rather than the headline.
Beyond those two, the field is straightforward. Elevation is 16 feet, so no altitude penalty. Fire cover is ICAO Category 7. Jet A-1 and AVGAS are both available, the latter unusual in the region and useful for turboprop and piston work. Handling is not mandatory, though every movement goes through the executive terminal in practice.
Permits are separate from slots. Landing permits for non-scheduled flights come from the General Civil Aviation Authority, and both are needed here. A slot without a permit is worth nothing, and the lead times differ, so we run them together.

Questions
Al Bateen, answered
What makes Al Bateen different from every other UAE airport?
It is a dedicated business aviation airport. Not an international airport with an executive terminal bolted on, but a field built and run for business jets, and the only one of its kind in the Middle East. There is no airline schedule to fit around, which is the single most useful fact about it.
How close is Al Bateen to Abu Dhabi?
About 6.5 nautical miles southeast of the city centre, which puts it materially closer in than Zayed International. For a meeting in Abu Dhabi the ground time difference is real, and on a short turnaround it is often the whole reason to use the field.
Does Al Bateen require a slot?
Yes. Al Bateen is slot coordinated and the slot must be applied for before arrival. This is worth stating plainly because the data most operators work from lists Al Bateen as needing no prior permission, and that is not the position. Treat it as a coordinated field and file early.
How long is the runway at Al Bateen?
The pavement is 10,505 feet, but that is not the number to plan against. The declared takeoff run available is 8,698 feet, roughly 1,800 feet shorter. For most business aircraft that is still comfortable, but it is a large enough gap that a heavy departure on a hot Abu Dhabi afternoon wants calculating against the declared figure rather than the headline one.
Is Al Bateen suitable for large aircraft?
For the great majority of business jets, yes. Fire cover is ICAO Category 7, the runway is long enough on declared distances, and the field elevation is 16 feet so there is no altitude penalty. Very large aircraft and anything approaching airliner size belong at Zayed International.
Is ground handling mandatory at Al Bateen?
No. Handling is not mandatory in the regulatory sense, though there is an executive terminal on the field and in practice every movement goes through it. Jet A-1 and AVGAS are both available, which is unusual in the region and useful for turboprop and piston operations.
What is happening with maintenance at Al Bateen?
Bombardier is building a 120,000 square foot service facility at the airport, scheduled to open in 2026. That is a significant addition for the region: it means heavy maintenance capability for a major manufacturer on a dedicated business aviation field, rather than fitting around airline operations at a larger airport.
Al Bateen or Zayed International for Abu Dhabi?
Al Bateen for almost any business aviation trip: closer to the city, built for the purpose, no airline traffic to queue behind. Zayed International when the aircraft is too large, when the passengers are connecting onto a scheduled flight, or when a specific customs or cargo requirement points there. Those are the exceptions rather than the rule.
Do you need a permit to fly into the UAE?
Landing permits for non-scheduled flights are issued by the General Civil Aviation Authority. The permit is a separate matter from the airport slot, and both are needed at Al Bateen. We handle them together, because a slot without a permit is worth nothing and the lead times differ.
Is Al Bateen a military field?
It is recorded as public and military use, and is operated by Abu Dhabi Airports. In practice civil business aviation operates normally, but the shared status is worth knowing about when planning around exercises or state movements, which do occur.
What is the history of Al Bateen?
It was Abu Dhabi's original international airport before Zayed International opened and took the scheduled traffic. Rather than closing, it was repurposed as a dedicated executive field, which is why it has an airport-scale runway and infrastructure serving what is now entirely business aviation. That inheritance is the reason a business aviation airport has 10,505 feet of pavement.
What time zone is Abu Dhabi in?
Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, all year. The UAE does not observe daylight saving.
