The Appeal
The simplest UAE airport to operate into
Every other UAE airport in this library carries an approval of some kind on top of the national permit. Dubai International is Level 3 slot coordinated with mandatory handling. Al Bateen is slot coordinated. Sharjah has mandatory handling.
Ras Al Khaimah has none of those. No slot requirement, no prior permission at the airport, no mandatory handling. The only approval in play is the national landing permit, which applies everywhere in the UAE.
Combined with a 12,336 foot runway and genuine spare capacity, that makes RAK a practical diversion and repositioning field as well as a destination. When Dubai parking is full, or a schedule slips outside a DXB slot, this is frequently where the aircraft goes.
Two things to note. Approaches here are non-precision, unlike the Dubai and Abu Dhabi fields, which matters in poor weather even if UAE conditions rarely make it binding. And fire cover is Category 7, the same as Al Bateen but below the Category 9 and 10 of the larger airports, so it is worth confirming against a very large aircraft.

When the destination is actually the north
RAK serves Ras Al Khaimah itself, Umm Al Quwain and the northern coast. For a trip to that part of the country, flying into Dubai and driving north spends exactly the time the aircraft was chartered to save.
It is about an hour from Dubai by road, so it is not a Dubai alternative in the way Sharjah is at twenty minutes. Choose it when the northern emirates are the destination, or when the administrative simplicity and spare parking are worth the drive.
The operator, the Department of Civil Aviation, also runs Fujairah. Both are emirate-level operations rather than parts of the Dubai or Abu Dhabi airport groups, and both are noticeably less bureaucratic as a result.

What the UAE requires
Landing permits for non-scheduled flights into the UAE are issued by the General Civil Aviation Authority and apply at every UAE airport, Ras Al Khaimah included.
The absence of a slot or airport PPR does not remove that requirement. What it does mean is that the permit is the only approval in play, which is a materially simpler picture than either Dubai airport presents.

Yes, considerably quieter than the Dubai fields. It handles a modest scheduled operation and has ample capacity for private movements. Parking is not the constraint it becomes at DXB, and there are no airshow peaks of the kind that fill Al Maktoum.
What is the fire category at Ras Al Khaimah?
ICAO Category 7. That is lower than the Dubai and Abu Dhabi international airports, which sit at Category 9 or 10, but it is the same category as Al Bateen and is sufficient for the great majority of business aircraft. For a very large aircraft it is worth confirming against the type.
