Dallas
Love Field
Five miles from downtown Dallas, and our home field. Two parallel runways, ILS to all four ends, customs on site and no slots. The restrictions that shaped this airport for thirty-five years never applied to private aviation.

The Airport
Dallas Love Field at a glance
Dallas Love Field carries the ICAO code KDAL and the IATA code DAL. It sits five miles northwest of downtown Dallas, owned by the city, and it is the field Icarus Jet operates from.
That proximity is the whole commercial case. For a meeting in the city, Love Field usually wins on total door to door time even when Dallas Fort Worth looks comparable on paper.
History
Named for a lieutenant, shaped by an act of Congress
Love Field opened in October 1917 as a US Army airfield training pilots after the United States entered the First World War. It is named after Lieutenant Moss L. Love, who in 1913 became the tenth fatality in US Army aviation history. The FAA records a civil activation date of October 1937.
On 22 November 1963 Air Force One was parked here when President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Lyndon B. Johnson took the presidential oath of office on board the aircraft at Love Field before it departed for Washington. It remains the only presidential inauguration ever conducted aboard an aircraft.
The airport’s modern shape was set by legislation rather than engineering. The Wright Amendment of 1979 restricted nonstop flights out of Love Field to Texas and adjacent states, deliberately channelling long haul traffic to the new Dallas Fort Worth. It held for thirty-five years and expired on 13 October 2014. Two conditions from the 2006 settlement survive: the airport is capped at 20 gates, and scheduled service remains domestic only.
A Common Misreading
The domestic-only rule does not apply to you
Because Love Field’s scheduled service is domestic only, people reasonably assume an international private arrival has to go to Dallas Fort Worth. That is wrong.
Love Field is a designated US Customs user fee airport. An international private flight can clear here. The Wright Amendment and its surviving conditions govern scheduled commercial service and gate counts, not general aviation, and the gate cap has no bearing on an aircraft parking on the FBO ramp.
It is the single most common misunderstanding about this airport, and it sends people to the wrong field and a longer drive.
Airfield
Two parallel runways and four ILS approaches
13R/31L is the main runway at 8,800 feet by 150. 13L/31R is 7,752 by 150. Both are grooved concrete, which behaves better than asphalt in the Texas heat and in heavy summer rain.
The approach provision is the strongest of any airport in our Texas group: ILS or LOC to all four runway ends, plus RNAV GPS procedures. Fire cover is FAR Part 139 Class I, Index C, a step above the Index B found at most regional fields. The tower and the airport both run continuously.
At 487 feet elevation, density altitude is a non-issue here in a way it never is in Colorado. What Love Field asks of you is different: it is a busy, sequenced environment shared with a major airline operation.
Operating
What it means in practice
No slots and no PPR for private movements. Handling is not mandatory and several fixed base operators compete on the field, which generally means better pricing than a single-operator airport.
The practical constraint is ramp and hangar space during large Dallas events rather than permission or performance. We book that ahead rather than on the day.
Individual FBO hours vary even though the airport itself is open around the clock, so we confirm line service timing against the schedule rather than assuming an open field means a staffed handler. For the wider Dallas picture, see our Dallas private jet charter page.
Nearby
The other Dallas fields
Four airports serve the metroplex, and the right one depends on where you are actually going.
Dallas Fort Worth suits very large aircraft or a connection onto scheduled long haul. Addison serves north Dallas and Plano. Executive covers the south of the city. Love Field is the one for downtown, and it is where our own operation is based.

Questions
Love Field, answered
Can private jets land at Dallas Love Field?
Yes. Love Field is one of the busiest business aviation airports in the United States, with two parallel runways, a 24 hour tower and multiple fixed base operators. There are no slots and no PPR for private movements. The commercial restrictions that shaped this airport were never aimed at general aviation.
How many runways does Love Field have?
Two parallel runways, both grooved concrete and both 150 feet wide. 13R/31L is the main at 8,800 feet, and 13L/31R is 7,752 feet. Having a genuine parallel pair rather than a single strip is a large part of why the field absorbs the traffic it does.
Does Love Field have customs?
Yes. Love Field is a designated US Customs user fee airport, so an international private arrival can clear here rather than being sent to Dallas Fort Worth. That is worth knowing, because the airport's scheduled service is domestic only and people often assume that applies across the board. It does not apply to private aviation.
What was the Wright Amendment and does it still matter?
It was a federal law from 1979 that restricted nonstop flights out of Love Field to Texas and adjacent states, deliberately channelling long haul traffic to Dallas Fort Worth. It expired on 13 October 2014. Two conditions from the 2006 settlement survive: Love Field is capped at 20 gates and scheduled service remains domestic only. Neither restricts private charter.
What instrument approaches does Love Field have?
ILS or LOC to all four runway ends, 13L, 13R, 31L and 31R, plus RNAV GPS procedures. It is the best equipped airport in our Texas group and holds up in weather that would close a single-approach field.
What is the fire category at Love Field?
FAR Part 139 Class I, Index C. That is a step above the Index B cover at most of the regional fields we operate into, and it reflects the size of aircraft the airport handles daily.
Is ground handling mandatory at Love Field?
No. Several fixed base operators compete on the field, which generally means better pricing and availability than a single-FBO airport. We will recommend one based on the aircraft, the turnaround and where on the field you need to be.
How far is Love Field from downtown Dallas?
About five miles northwest, which is the entire commercial argument for the airport. Dallas FortWorth is considerably further out, so for a meeting in the city Love Field usually wins on total door to door time even when DFW looks comparable on paper.
Love Field or Dallas Fort Worth for a private charter?
Love Field for anything going into the city. It is closer, quieter on the general aviation side and clears customs. Dallas Fort Worth makes sense when the aircraft is very large, when you are connecting to a scheduled long haul, or when Love Field ramp space is tight during a major event.
Do you need slots or prior permission at Love Field?
No slots and no PPR for private operations. The tower runs continuously and the field is attended around the clock. Ramp and hangar space during large Dallas events is the practical constraint rather than permission.
When was Dallas Love Field built?
It opened in October 1917 as a US Army airfield training pilots after the United States entered the First World War. It is named after Lieutenant Moss L. Love, who in 1913 became the tenth fatality in US Army aviation history. The FAA records a civil activation date of October 1937.
What is Love Field's connection to President Kennedy?
It is where Air Force One was parked on 22 November 1963. After the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas that day, Lyndon B. Johnson took the presidential oath of office on board the aircraft at Love Field before it departed for Washington. It remains the only presidential inauguration to have taken place aboard an aircraft.
Is Love Field open 24 hours?
Yes, the airport and its tower operate continuously. Individual FBO hours vary, so we confirm line service timing against the schedule rather than assuming the field being open means the handler is staffed.
What time zone is Dallas Love Field in?
Central Time, CST in winter and CDT in summer, which is UTC-6 and UTC-5 respectively. Note this differs from the Colorado fields, which sit an hour behind on Mountain Time.
