How Italy works for a private flight

Italy is a country of joint civil and military fields with their own hours, summer parking caps and prior permissions, and the desk treats each airport as its own rulebook. Rome Ciampino is the private jet field, open 0400 to 2100 UTC with customs around the clock and parking by PPR; Fiumicino takes general aviation only at night unless the flight is diplomatic, medical or a Ciampino overflow with a one-hour turn. Milan Linate is eight kilometres from the city with no overnight for visiting aircraft and a 45-minute handling window; Malpensa takes the larger aircraft and the parking. Naples caps ground time at three hours in summer and 48 hours in winter, so the aircraft drops and repositions to Salerno, which allows 48 hours. Olbia in August is one of the busiest private airports in the Mediterranean. Bari, Brindisi and Catania give three hours or less in summer under joint military operations, Treviso about five, Pisa three days, and Perugia turns aircraft in two hours. Arrivals from mosquito-risk regions need a residual disinsection certificate no older than eight weeks or face treatment on arrival. The desk files the PPRs, confirms the parking or the repositioning before the aircraft moves, and carries the disinsection paperwork with the trip.

Rome

Ciampino (LIRA): runway 0400 to 2100 UTC, general aviation terminal 0500 to 2130 UTC, customs 24 hours, fuel about thirty minutes and not pre-bookable, parking by PPR, 15 kilometres from the centre. Fiumicino (LIRF): general aviation 2300 to 0600 local only, daytime for diplomatic, ambulance and Ciampino overflow with a one-hour turn, no FBO.

Milan

Linate (LIML): eight kilometres from the city, no overnight for visiting aircraft, 45-minute handling ground time, night flights pre-advised, doors closed 1000 to 1800 local under the Popillia measures, slots on the Monza weekend. Malpensa (LIMC): 24 hours, parking on prior permission case by case, the field for the largest aircraft. Bergamo, Parma, Brescia and Turin take the overflow.

Naples and the Amalfi coast

Capodichino (LIRN): 0400 to 2100Z with no extensions except medical or military, a three-hour ground cap in summer and 48 hours in winter, PPR filed no earlier than 15 days ahead with MTOW, registration, billing and the full schedule. Salerno Costa d'Amalfi (LIRI): up to 48 hours, customs 0600 to 2400 local, fuel in about twenty minutes, the repositioning answer. Capri and the coast by helicopter.

The islands and the south

Olbia (LIEO): 24 hours, terminal 0700 to 2200 local, overnight parking, no PPR or slot, the August squeeze. Catania: one to two hours on the ground in summer, no overnight. Bari and Brindisi: joint military fields, three hours in summer, Bari on PPR and slot. Taranto Grottaglie: mornings only.

The north and centre

Venice Marco Polo: PPR, parking up to 72 hours, slots at short notice, hangars close to the city. Treviso: about five hours. Pisa: three days. Florence: on stand availability, light jets only on its short runway. Lucca: parking and AVGAS but not a port of entry. Perugia: two-hour turns. Genoa and Turin on PPR. Cuneo without PPR in winter tower hours.

Disinsection

Arrivals from Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and the Caribbean must show pre-flight or residual disinsection certification, valid eight weeks and stating method, date, product and applicator, or face treatment on arrival at the operator's cost. Enforcement is strongest at Malpensa, Fiumicino and Naples; add thirty to forty-five minutes for the health check.

Fees, permits and crew

Private flights without an AOC pay double the landing and take-off taxes; taxi flights with an AOC pay the standard rate, and Part 135 operators submit the AOC. No landing permit for Part 91. Crew need a Schengen visa where their nationality requires it and the IATA crew certificate. The desk shows every airport charge on the quote.

Events

Monza in September puts slots on Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo with overnight not guaranteed. Milan fashion and design weeks fill Linate. Ferragosto in mid-August fills Olbia and the coast. The Milan Winter Games in 2026 ran on Malpensa prior permission and Linate's new terminal; the note lives on this page.

Questions

Italy trip support questions

Which Rome airport should a private jet use?

Ciampino, 15 kilometres from the centre with customs around the clock and a general aviation terminal. Fiumicino takes general aviation only between 2300 and 0600 local, or by day for diplomatic, ambulance and Ciampino overflow flights with a one-hour turn.

Can my jet stay overnight at Milan Linate?

Not as a visiting aircraft. Linate gives a 45-minute handling window and no overnight except for based aircraft and medevac. Malpensa takes the parking on prior permission, and Bergamo, Parma or Brescia are the cheaper alternates.

How long can I stay on the ground at Naples?

Three hours in summer and 48 hours in winter, with no extensions except medical or military. The aircraft drops and repositions to Salerno, which allows 48 hours, and comes back for the departure.

When can I file PPR for Naples or Salerno?

No earlier than 15 days ahead, with the MTOW, registration, billing details and the full schedule. The desk files on the day the window opens.

Do I need a landing permit for Italy?

No, not for a private Part 91 flight, and Part 135 operators submit the AOC. Private flights without an AOC pay double the landing and take-off taxes, which the desk shows on the quote.

What is the disinsection rule?

Arrivals from mosquito-risk regions show a residual disinsection certificate no older than eight weeks, stating method, date, product and applicator, or the aircraft is treated on arrival at the operator's cost. Enforcement is strongest at Malpensa, Fiumicino and Naples.

Is Olbia difficult in August?

It is one of the busiest private airports in the Mediterranean that month. It runs 24 hours with overnight parking and no PPR or slot, so parking is the constraint and the desk confirms it before the aircraft moves.

Which Italian airports have summer parking caps?

Naples three hours, Bari and Brindisi three hours under joint military operations, Catania one to two hours, Treviso about five, Perugia two-hour turns, Pisa three days, Venice up to 72 hours by PPR. The country page above lists each.

What changes on the Monza Grand Prix weekend?

Slots on Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo, overnight parking not guaranteed, and Lugano across the border as the quiet alternate. The Monza guide has the plan.

What does the desk need to file an Italian trip?

Aircraft documents including the AOC where applicable, crew nationalities for the visa check, the itinerary with the ground time you actually need, and the origin of the flight for the disinsection rule. It comes back with PPRs filed, parking or repositioning confirmed and handling booked.
