How Greece works for a private flight

Greece is a parking problem with an airport attached. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority lets slots and prior permission be requested only 14 days before the date of flight, at every airport in the country, and in summer the island fields give a jet forty minutes on the ground and no overnight: Mykonos holds about seven jets on the ramp, Santorini has stands but no general aviation overnight, and both reoffer a denied slot that must be accepted within thirty minutes. Athens allows about twelve hours with slots issued up to seven days ahead and overnight confirmed only a day before, so the aircraft that dropped its passengers on Mykonos waits at Athens, Thessaloniki, Kos, Samos or Heraklion, or across the water at Paphos, Izmir or Bodrum. The passengers finish the journey by helicopter, sunrise to sunset, limited by weight rather than seats. The desk files the slot the day the window opens, holds the parking alternate with the trip, and quotes the helicopter with the jet.

The 14-day rule

Slots and PPR can be requested only 14 days before the date of flight, at every Greek airport. The desk files on the day the window opens, with the aircraft documents and the receiving handler already in place.

Ground time on the islands

Mykonos and Santorini: forty minutes in season, no overnight, a denied slot reoffered and lost if not accepted within thirty minutes. Rhodes: no overnight, slot coordinated. Paros: no customs, EU and Schengen departures only, a short runway and no jet fuel.

Where the aircraft waits

Athens up to about twelve hours with 53 stands, Thessaloniki 24 hours with overnight, Kos 24 hours and slot coordinated with overnight, Samos 24 hours, no slots and overnight with a towbar on board, Heraklion on request. Corfu, Chania, Kavala and Ioannina for longer stays. Paphos, Izmir and Bodrum across the border with 24-hour customs.

The helicopter last mile

Athens to Mykonos about 50 minutes, Mykonos to Santorini about 30, the Cyclades hops from eight minutes upward, all sunrise to sunset from the airport helipad or a beach club pad with the venue's approval, and limited by weight rather than seats. Every sector has its own page on the Athens and Mykonos route hubs.

Fees and handling

Handling is arranged with the slot. Greek regional airports charge landing and parking by tonnage and a fire-truck attendance fee applies during fuelling; the desk shows every line on the quote so the number covers it.

Customs and entry

Athens, Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Kos, Samos and Heraklion clear international arrivals. Paros and the small islands do not, so an international flight clears at Athens or Kos first. EES applies to non-EU passengers.

Season

May to October, with July and August the weeks when the slot, the parking and the helicopter all tighten together. June and September give the same crossings with easier availability. The meltemi blows hard in the afternoons in high summer; mornings are the calmer lift.

Questions

Greece trip support questions

How far ahead can I request a slot in Greece?

Fourteen days before the date of flight, at every Greek airport, and not before. The desk files on the day the window opens with the documents and the handler already in place.

Can my jet stay on Mykonos or Santorini overnight?

No. In season both give about forty minutes on the ground and no overnight parking. The aircraft drops the passengers and repositions to Athens, Thessaloniki, Kos, Samos or Heraklion, or across the border to Paphos, Izmir or Bodrum.

What happens if my Mykonos slot is denied?

It is usually reoffered at another time, and the offer lapses if it is not accepted within thirty minutes. The desk watches the slot and answers inside the window.

Can a jet land on Paros?

A light jet or a turboprop can, on a short runway with no jet fuel, and only from an EU or Schengen departure point because Paros has no customs. International arrivals clear at Athens or Kos first.

Where does the aircraft wait during an island stay?

Athens for up to about twelve hours, Thessaloniki or Kos for an overnight, Samos with no slots at all and a towbar on board, Heraklion on request, and Corfu, Chania or Kavala for a longer stay.

How do passengers get from Athens to the islands?

By helicopter from the airport helipad, about 50 minutes to Mykonos, sunrise to sunset, limited by weight rather than seats. The Athens and Mykonos route hubs quote every sector.

Is there a fee for fuelling in Greece?

A fire-truck attendance fee applies during fuelling at Greek airports, alongside landing and parking charges by tonnage. The desk shows every line on the quote.

Which Greek airports clear customs?

Athens, Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Kos, Samos and Heraklion. Paros and the small islands do not.

When is the best time to fly to the Greek islands?

June and September give the same crossings as high summer with easier slots, parking and helicopters. July and August need the slot filed the day the window opens and parking held from the start.

What does the desk need to file a Greek island trip?

The aircraft documents, the dates and the island, the passenger and crew list, and where the aircraft can wait. It comes back with the slot filed on day one, the parking alternate held, the helicopter quoted with the jet, and handling confirmed.
