When and
Where to Fly

The working reference

Timing is the part nobody plans for

Where to fly is usually the easy question. When is the one that decides whether the trip works. Egypt is comfortable from October to April and punishing in Upper Egypt in July. The wildebeest migration builds through the rainy months and the camps sell out ahead of it. The Swiss winter calendar concentrates more private aviation demand into six weeks than the rest of the year combined. The Greek islands stop having a parking problem in October. None of that appears on a route map or in a quote, and all of it decides whether you get the aircraft, the timing and the field you actually wanted. These guides are organised around that: the season, the fixed dates, and the airport choice at the far end.

Seasons move three things at once

Aircraft, crew and parking tighten together, not separately. A request into the Greek islands in August or Switzerland in January is competing for all three at the same moment, which is why the same itinerary priced in May and in August rarely returns the same number.

Fixed dates

A handful of dates drive a disproportionate share of European demand: the World Economic Forum at Davos in January, the Snow Polo World Cup and White Turf at St Moritz through late January and early February, Art Basel in June, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival in May. Book against the calendar, not the month.

The airport is the decision

Most destinations have more than one sensible field and the difference is ground time. Zurich against Samedan for Davos, the Rome and Paris fields, Nassau against the outer islands: the right answer depends on the address at the far end and the weather risk you can carry.

Where jets stop and something else starts

Safari camps, Greek islands, Capri and the Alps all end with a leg a jet cannot fly. Turboprops, helicopters and ground transfers finish the journey, and the transfer is usually where a plan succeeds or fails.

Events and groups

Sport and cultural events bring fixed dates, fixed capacity and competition for the same aircraft. Teams, delegations and hospitality programmes need capacity matched to group size rather than cabin matched to comfort, and they need it booked long before the fixture list firms up.

Where the destination pages sit

These guides cover the timing and the access. For the commercial detail on a specific city or route, the destination pages and the route guides carry the airports, sector times and aircraft for each one.

Questions

When and Where to Fly questions

When is the best time to fly to Egypt?

October through April is the comfortable window, cool enough to walk archaeological complexes and desert sites, and it is also the peak, so aircraft and hotels tighten. May through August is considerably hotter, particularly in Upper Egypt, and works best for the Red Sea coast. The shoulder months of October and April give the best balance of weather, availability and crowds.

When does the wildebeest migration happen?

The movement builds through the rainy months from roughly July to October, when over two million animals cross between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. The Mara River crossings are what most visitors come for. Camps inside the reserves book out well ahead of it, so the aircraft is rarely the binding constraint on this trip.

Why are the Greek islands so hard to fly into in summer?

Because slots, parking and daylight all bind at once. Mykonos has run slot restrictions for private aircraft from May to October since 2016, jets drop passengers and reposition rather than park, and helicopter transfers are daylight only. In October the same routing is straightforward.

Which airport should I use for Davos?

Zurich handles the international arrivals but leaves roughly a two hour drive. Samedan is general aviation only and about thirty minutes closer, but it is the second highest airport in Europe and its weather closes the door more often than anyone would like. An itinerary through Samedan needs a Zurich or Geneva alternate held in reserve rather than assumed.

How far ahead should I book for a major event?

For the fixed-date events, considerably further than for ordinary travel. Davos, the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes, Art Basel and the major tournaments all draw demand into the same days, and it is aircraft availability and airport parking rather than price that runs out first. Weeks to months, not days.

Can a private jet reach a safari camp directly?

Not usually. Jets reach the regional airport and turboprops or light aircraft fly the bush strips near the camps, which is why access rather than speed defines a safari itinerary. Flights out of Nairobi Wilson put you close to the camps, and helicopters and balloon flights are arranged from the same base.

Is it worth flying private to the Caribbean?

It is the region where it changes the trip most, because the outer islands are poorly served by scheduled flights and connections through the hubs eat a day at each end. Nassau is the main gateway for the Bahamas, and smaller aircraft reach the family islands directly.

What is the busiest time of year for private aviation?

There is no single peak, there are several regional ones stacked through the year: the Swiss winter calendar in January and February, the Mediterranean from June to September, the Gulf event season through the winter, and the Christmas and New Year period almost everywhere. Your destination decides which one you are competing with.

Do I need to book the ski resort transfer separately?

Usually yes, and it should be arranged with the flight rather than after it. The nearest airport to an American or Alpine ski resort is often still a meaningful drive, and in winter the drive is the part that varies. Ask for the transfer time in current conditions, not the map distance.

How do you move a sports team or a large group?

By matching aircraft capacity to the group rather than the cabin to the passenger. That runs from turboprops for short hops through to narrowbody and widebody charters for 50 to 200 or more. The hard part is rarely the aircraft; it is fixed fixture dates, kit, and cross-border routing on short notice.
