Private Jet Parking in Greece

Jul 18, 2022

Greece is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. Therefore, aircraft parking in the Aegean Islands consistently remains the most vied aspect of a private jet charter to Greece. General aviation traffic in the region grows remarkably as the summer months approach. Amidst the flow of enthusiastic passengers, global trip support teams find themselves tied up with uncertain issues. Private jet parking in Greece relies on the airport’s operating hours, overnight restrictions, and other capacity limitations.

PPR and Slots

PPR at Athens Airport is only granted for slots under 2 hours, making parking at Athens challenging. Additionally, PPR is mandatory at all airports before requesting slots. While some airports require 48 hours to process the PPR, slots can only be booked on weekdays between 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. On top of that, preferred slot timings are hard to secure amid the plethora of requests.

Mykonos Airport

Mykonos Airport limits ground drop-off time to only 45 minutes from June to September. Private jets are prohibited from parking at Mykonos Airport beyond the instructed time limit. Santorini is another favorite spot, but its airport has similar restrictions in place. Jets landing there have no choice but to drop off and reposition. Alternate airports for repositioning in Greece exist with their nuances.

Kos Airport

Kos International Airport is a worthy candidate since it operates round the clock with seven parking positions. Although it has limited space, it is the first alternative to parking at Mykonos. For a plane up to 10 tons, parking up to 24 hours at Kos Airport costs 5 EUR per ton. Landing has a fixed charge of 200 EUR for aircraft weighing between 5 to 10 tons. These prices are bound to have increased since their indefinite effective timeline from 2018.

Samos Airport

Samos Airport is another strong candidate for repositioning due to its flexible operating hours and similar pricing structure. However, for aircraft above 10 tons, charges at Samos are 5% higher than at Kos. Comparatively, international air traffic at Samos during June 2022 was only 1/7th of that at Kos. So, the race for slots is not entirely as bad here.

Kavala Airport

Kavala Airport is even less busy than Samos, but unlike Samos, it is not operational 24/7. On Tuesdays and Sundays, the airport is functional between 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM. All other days of the week cater to flights between 7:30 AM to 10:30 PM. It is also a smaller infrastructure, with questionable Wi-Fi and not more than 2 or 3 shops for entertainment, food, and leisure. On the bright side, the first 5 hours of parking are free for all aircraft at Kavala.

Other Greek Airports

Mytilene, Rhodes, Chania, Thessaloniki, and Corfu Airports operate flights 24/7 for the summer of 2022. The charges for these airports are similar to Kos since they cluster under the management of Fraport Greece. In June 2022, the highest records of flights go to Rhodes, Thessaloniki, and Corfu. Aktion is a joint military and civil airport where it takes a minimum of 4 working days to process PPR. The airport operational timings for each day of the week are different.

Conclusively, it is better to stick to the schedule once slots are approved because failing to use them can get you stuck with penalties.
