The route
Why fly private from Dallas to Miami?
Dallas to Miami is the long weekend sector out of our home market: 960 nautical miles, a touch over two hours in the air, and a landing at a field eleven miles from downtown instead of an airline terminal on the wrong side of the city. Most of these trips are two to four nights, which changes how the aircraft is planned.
Why private works here
Leave Love Field, five miles from downtown Dallas, and you are on the ground at Opa-Locka before an airline passenger has boarded at DFW. Opa-Locka is the field almost all Miami business aviation uses: three runways, an ILS at both ends of the main one, and five FBOs on the field, so the car is at the aircraft and you are on the Beach or in Brickell in half an hour. There is no queue at either end and the return leaves when you say.
Aircraft fit
At this distance the class decides the cabin, not whether you can make it. A light jet flies it nonstop with six or seven aboard and carry-on baggage. A midsize jet carries eight with full luggage and a cabin you can stand in. A super-midsize jet takes the same eight faster and quieter, which is the aircraft most Dallas clients choose for a long weekend with luggage. Heavy jets and regional jets cover groups of ten or more.
Advisor note
On Miami the first thing we ask is the return date. A same-week return usually keeps the aircraft with you or brings it back for you; a longer stay is often better quoted as two one-ways, because South Florida has a deep pool of aircraft looking for a leg back to Texas. We price both before we recommend one.
Icarus Jet charter desk, DallasCost
What determines the cost of a Dallas to Miami private jet charter?
A two-hour sector is priced on the aircraft, the trip shape and the calendar. These are the things that move the number on Dallas to Miami, in the order they usually matter.
Aircraft class
Light, midsize and super-midsize jets all fly it nonstop. The cabin you choose is the biggest single swing in the quote, and on a flight this long the extra space is worth more than it is on a short hop.
Round trip or two one-ways
A short stay keeps the aircraft with you or returns it to Dallas. For a longer stay we often quote two one-way flights instead, because Miami is a large charter market with aircraft positioning back to Texas. The desk prices both.
The calendar
December to April is the Miami season. Art Basel in early December and the Grand Prix on the first weekend of May pull aircraft from across the country. Those dates need firm bookings weeks ahead.
Airport and handling
Opa-Locka has five FBOs competing on the field, which keeps handling and fuel honest. We choose the FBO for your ground time and tell you what it costs before you book.
Timing
Arrivals into Opa-Locka after midnight local need the main runway booked an hour ahead under the overnight closure rules. We handle that; it just needs to be in the plan.
What the number covers
We tell you what the quote covers before you book and we hold the operator to the number we gave you. No surprises on the invoice is the point of using the Dallas desk.
Aircraft
Which aircraft flies Dallas to Miami?
Every jet class in the Icarus brokered fleet flies this sector nonstop. These are the three quoted most on Dallas to Miami.
Phenom 300 and Citation CJ class
Six or seven passengers with carry-on baggage. The most efficient way to fly the sector for a small party, and comfortably within range in both directions.
Citation XLS and Hawker class
Eight passengers with full luggage, a stand-up cabin and an enclosed lavatory. The default for a long weekend with bags.
Challenger 350 and Citation Longitude class
The same eight to nine passengers in a wider, quieter cabin, faster on the sector, with baggage space for golf bags and ski cases.
Groups of ten or more go on a heavy jet or one of the regional jets we broker. See the jets we broker for the full range by cabin class.
Before you fly
What should I know before flying Dallas to Miami?
It is a domestic flight, so there is no customs at either end. Bring photo ID; the crew checks it at the aircraft. You can arrive at the FBO ten to fifteen minutes before departure.
Opa-Locka is the Miami arrival. It is eleven miles north of downtown, Miami-Dade County's business aviation field, with three runways, an ILS at both ends of the main 8,002 foot runway and five FBOs to choose from. Miami International is only worth using if you are connecting to an airline flight there.
Opa-Locka closes its runways overnight. Between 0400 and 1200Z, which is midnight to 8 am Eastern in summer, the main runway is available by prior permission booked an hour ahead and the small runway is shut. A late arrival from Dallas is routine; it just has to be filed. The desk does this on every late flight.
On the Dallas side, Love Field is five miles from downtown and our home field. Addison is the north Dallas choice with three FBOs open around the clock. Dallas Executive is the quiet option six miles southwest of downtown. DFW carries landing fees and airline traffic and is rarely the right answer for this trip.
You gain an hour on the way there and lose it coming back. Dallas is on Central time and Miami on Eastern. Hurricane season runs June to November; the desk watches the forecast on the day and moves the departure rather than letting you sit at the FBO.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Dallas to Miami?
Miami's private aviation season runs December to April, when the weather is at its best and aircraft availability across South Florida is at its tightest. Inside that window two dates stand out: Art Basel Miami Beach in early December, and the Miami Grand Prix on the first weekend of May just after the season ends. Both pull aircraft in from across the country, so give the desk firm dates a few weeks ahead for either.
Summer is quieter and easier to book, with afternoon thunderstorms and the June to November hurricane season as the things to plan around. For an ordinary trip, two or three days of notice is normal from Dallas; same-day is often possible for a light or midsize jet.
