Why fly private from Dallas to Costa Rica?
Dallas to Costa Rica is the long-weekend sector on our desk: 1540 nautical miles, about three and a half hours in the air, and a landing where the resort actually is rather than a four-hour transfer from the wrong airport. Costa Rica is one of the easiest countries in the region to fly into privately, and the two airports split the country cleanly.
Why private works here
Leave Love Field, five miles from downtown Dallas, and land at San José for the capital, the Central Valley, Arenal, Monteverde and the Pacific coast south of it, or at Guanacaste for Papagayo, Tamarindo and Nosara. The two are four hours apart by road, so the choice of airport is the biggest single thing we get right. Customs is cleared in the general aviation area at either field, the car is at the aircraft, and an early departure from Dallas has you at the villa by mid afternoon.

At this distance a super-midsize jet is the comfortable answer: eight or nine passengers, full luggage, nonstop both ways with margin. A midsize jet flies it, but with a full cabin against a headwind the desk plans a fuel stop rather than hopes. Heavy jets fly it with the most room and carry enough fuel to avoid an expensive uplift in Costa Rica. Light jets need a stop and are rarely the right money on this sector.

Before you fly
What should I know before flying Dallas to Costa Rica?
It is an international flight, so bring passports for everyone aboard. The desk files the passenger manifest with US Customs and Border Protection before departure and confirms each passenger's entry requirements for Costa Rica. Customs is cleared in the general aviation area on arrival, and on the way home at Love Field, which has customs on site.
San José is the airport for the capital and the south. Juan Santamaría sits 20 kilometres north west of the city near Alajuela, with a 9,882 foot runway at 3,007 feet elevation and Category 9 fire cover. Escazú and Santa Ana are 30 to 45 minutes away, and Los Sueños is about an hour. The airport runs 24 hours with slots at the busier periods.
Guanacaste is the airport for the Pacific resorts. Still called Liberia by everyone in aviation, it was renamed in July 2021. A 9,022 foot runway at 269 feet, customs on site, and 40 minutes to Papagayo, an hour to Tamarindo and two hours to Nosara. From San José those same resorts are four hours by road, which is the whole argument.
On the Dallas side, Love Field is five miles from downtown, our home field, and clears customs on the return. Addison is the north Dallas choice with three FBOs open around the clock. Dallas Executive is the quiet option six miles southwest of downtown. DFW carries landing fees and airline traffic and is rarely the right answer for this trip.
Leave Dallas in the morning. Costa Rica is on Central Standard Time all year and does not observe daylight saving, so it matches Dallas in winter and sits an hour behind in summer. A morning departure lands just after midday local, which puts the drive to the coast in daylight and, in the green season, ahead of the afternoon rain.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Dallas to Costa Rica?
December to April is the Pacific dry season and the peak for both airports. The Christmas and New Year weeks are the tightest of the year for aircraft out of Dallas and for parking at Guanacaste, so give the desk firm dates a few weeks ahead for those. The rest of the dry season books comfortably a week or two out.
May to November is the green season: cheaper on the ground, quieter at the airports and wetter in the afternoons. Two or three days of notice is normal from Dallas then, and a morning departure keeps the arrival ahead of the weather.
