The route
Why fly private from Dallas to Los Angeles?
Dallas to Los Angeles is one of the busiest domestic charter sectors in the country and the west-coast business run on our desk: 1081 nautical miles, about three hours in the air, and a choice of three landings that put you on the right side of a city famous for its traffic. Studios, tech, entertainment and the second home all fly it, in both directions, every week.
Why private works here
Leave Love Field, five miles from downtown Dallas, and land where the meeting is. Van Nuys is the business aviation field for the Valley and the Westside. Burbank is the studios. LAX is for the day you are connecting onto an international flight, and almost never otherwise, because the airlines have priority and a private aircraft waits. No airline queue at either end, the team travels together, and the two-hour time change means a morning departure from Dallas is a morning arrival in Los Angeles.
Aircraft fit
At this distance nearly every aircraft we broker flies it nonstop. A light jet carries six or seven with carry-on baggage, and on a winter westbound leg into a headwind the desk checks the smallest types for a fuel stop. A midsize jet carries eight with full luggage and a stand-up cabin. A super-midsize jet takes eight or nine faster and quieter and is the usual choice for a working flight. Heavy jets fly it with the most room, and are the one case where LAX can be the right landing.
Advisor note
The Los Angeles decision is the airport, not the aircraft. LAX will take anything you bring, and it will also make you wait behind the airlines and charge you for the privilege. Unless you are connecting to a scheduled flight from the same terminal, we land you at Van Nuys or Burbank and you are in the car before an LAX arrival has cleared the ramp. We say so on every quote.

What determines the cost of a Dallas to Los Angeles private jet charter?
A three-hour sector is priced on the aircraft, the trip shape, the landing you choose and the dates. These are the things that move the number on Dallas to Los Angeles.
Aircraft class
Light, midsize and super-midsize jets all fly it nonstop. The cabin you choose is the biggest single swing in the quote, and for a working flight the super-midsize is usually worth the difference.
Round trip or two one-ways
A same-day return keeps the aircraft and crew with you. A stay of several nights is often better as two one-way flights. The desk prices both and tells you which is cleaner.
The landing
Fuel and parking at LAX are considerably more expensive than at Van Nuys or Burbank, and with two FBOs there is little competition to soften it. Landing at the reliever fields is cheaper as well as faster.
The calendar
Los Angeles is busy year round. Awards season in the first quarter and the summer weeks tighten aircraft out of Dallas and ramp space in the Valley. Those dates need firm bookings a week or two ahead.
Winds
The westbound leg runs into the prevailing wind and in winter can add twenty minutes. On the smallest light jets that is the difference between nonstop and a fuel stop, which the desk checks before it quotes.
What the number covers
We tell you what the quote covers before you book and we hold the operator to the number we gave you. No surprises on the invoice is the point of using the Dallas desk.
Aircraft
Which aircraft flies Dallas to Los Angeles?
Every jet class in the Icarus brokered fleet flies this sector. These are the three quoted most on Dallas to Los Angeles.
Phenom 300 and Citation CJ class
Six or seven passengers with carry-on baggage. Nonstop in normal winds; the desk checks the winter westbound leg on the smallest types.
Citation XLS and Hawker 800 class
Eight passengers with full luggage, a stand-up cabin and an enclosed lavatory. Comfortable in both directions.
Challenger 350 and Gulfstream G280 class
Eight or nine in a wider, quieter cabin with a proper galley, and the usual choice for a working flight.
Larger groups and the coast-to-coast connection go on a heavy jet. See the jets we broker for the full range by cabin class.
Before you fly
What should I know before flying Dallas to Los Angeles?
It is a domestic flight, so there is no customs at either end. Bring photo ID; the crew checks it at the aircraft. You can arrive at the FBO ten to fifteen minutes before departure.
Van Nuys is the default landing. It is the business aviation field for Los Angeles, with an 8,001 foot main runway that takes everything up to the heavy jets, and it sits in the Valley with the Westside, Beverly Hills and Hollywood within reach. Burbank, with a 6,886 foot runway, is the choice for the studios and the eastern Valley. Both are reliever fields where the private aircraft is the main customer rather than the exception.
LAX is the exception. Four runways, ILS to every end, no slots and no weight limit, so it takes anything. The airlines come first, though, so expect to wait at busy times, and fuel and parking cost considerably more than at the relievers. It is right when you are connecting onto an international flight from the same airport, when your ground destination is genuinely closer, or when a large aircraft rules the reliever fields out. Our LAX guide covers it in detail.
On the Dallas side, Love Field is five miles from downtown and our home field. Addison is the north Dallas choice with three FBOs open around the clock. Dallas Executive is the quiet option six miles southwest of downtown. DFW carries landing fees and airline traffic and is rarely the right answer for this trip.
You gain two hours on the way there and lose them coming back. Dallas is on Central time and Los Angeles on Pacific. A 7 am departure from Love Field is on the ground at Van Nuys before 8 am local, which is why the same-day return is a common shape of this trip.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Dallas to Los Angeles?
This is a business sector and Los Angeles is busy year round, so there is no cheap season to wait for. What moves is aircraft availability out of Dallas and ramp space in the Valley during awards season in the first quarter and the summer weeks, when the same midsize and super-midsize jets are wanted in several cities at once. For those dates, give the desk firm dates a week or two ahead.
Outside those weeks, two or three days of notice is normal from Dallas and same-day is often possible for a light or midsize jet. Winter brings the strongest westbound headwinds, which lengthen the outbound leg and are the one time the desk looks twice at the smallest light jets on this route.

Which Los Angeles airport do private jets use?
Van Nuys for most trips: it is the business aviation field for Los Angeles, with an 8,001 foot runway, and serves the Valley and the Westside. Burbank for the studios and the eastern Valley. LAX only when you are connecting onto a scheduled flight there, when your destination is genuinely closer, or when a large aircraft rules the relievers out.
Can a private jet land at LAX?
Yes. LAX has four runways, an ILS to every end, no slots and no weight limit, so it takes any aircraft. The desk lands you there only when there is a reason to.
Which Dallas airport do private jets use for Los Angeles?

Yes in normal conditions. A strong winter headwind westbound with a full cabin can put the smallest light jets close to a fuel stop. The desk checks the winds on the day and will say before you book.
What determines the cost of a Dallas to Los Angeles private jet?
The aircraft class, whether the trip is a same-day return, a longer stay or two one-way flights, which Los Angeles field you land at, and the dates against awards season and the summer weeks. We tell you what the quote covers before you book.
Can I fly Los Angeles to Dallas on the same page?
Yes. The sector is quoted in both directions. Put Van Nuys, Burbank or LAX as the departure in the form and the desk handles it the same way.

No customs, it is a domestic flight. There is no security line either; you arrive at the FBO ten to fifteen minutes before departure, the crew checks photo ID at the aircraft, and you board.

How much notice do I need to book Dallas to Los Angeles?
