Major private jet airports in Mexico

Among the largest markets for business aviation in the Americas, Mexico has several private jet-friendly airports. The country, likewise, is really popular among U.S.-based travelers. Cancun and Cabo San Lucas are two places that rank at the top for travelers who choose to fly by private jet.

  • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD): While mainly receiving commercial aircraft, this airport also accommodates private jets. It is one of the most utilized airports by passengers traveling to Cabo San Lucas. It has very adequate FBO services for private aviation.
  • Cabo San Lucas International Private Jet Airport (CSL): This is the only international private jet-dedicated airport in Mexico. It is open every day from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. and has access directly to the beaches and resorts of Cabo.

For the Caribbean side of Mexico:

  • Cancun International Airport (CUN): Located along Mexico’s stunning Caribbean coastline, Cancun International accepts a lot of private aviation movements. The three full-service FBOs certainly create healthy competition, raising the level of service and facilities for the private traveler.
  • Tulum International Airport (TQO): Officially inaugurated in December 2023, most private jet travelers do not know that it’s possible to directly fly into Tulum. In fact, the airport received its first international flight from Dallas in early 2024 and is a great option for private jets visiting the region.

The Caribbean: Upscale private jet getaways

Each of the islands in the Caribbean has its distinct entry requirements and its choice of airports that can handle private jet charters. The following are highlights of popular private jet destinations in the region with some key considerations before your next private jet flight:

Bahamas

Driving distances: Conveniently located only about 8–10 miles from the city center of Nassau, the Lynden Pindling International Airport locates major hotels and resorts only a short drive away.

Safety: Overall, the Bahamas is a safe destination for travelers, especially at tourism hotspots such as Nassau and Paradise Island. However, take normal precautions to avoid walking in isolated areas at night and in unsafe situations.

Taxes: A 10% VAT is added to most goods and services within the Bahamas. This is usually incorporated into hotel prices, restaurant bills, and other purchase rates.

Pet regulations: Pets are welcome in the Bahamas but have certain entry requirements, including a veterinarian health certificate, proof of vaccinations, and an import permit. It’s best to coordinate with our charter team to ensure compliance with all necessary regulations.

Barbados

Driving distances: Grantley Adams International Airport is roughly 20-30 minutes into the city center, depending on traffic. Access to beautiful beaches and resorts can be quite convenient from this terminal.

Safety: Barbados has garnered accolades for being a relatively safe island, particularly around tourist areas. Visitors should take standard safety precautions, especially when going to more remote locations or driving around roundabouts.

Taxes: Almost all services and goods are VATed, usually within the price of sale. It may be worth asking providers if taxes are included in the quoted services and accommodation.

Pet regulations: Barbados requires a unique entry for pets. An import permit must be issued. Health certificates and a local aviation provider with knowledge are required to handle all the paperwork so there are no complications. Your pet must be kenneled or carried in carriers when arriving and leaving.

Aruba

Driving distances: Aruba’s Queen Beatrix International Airport serves Oranjestad, about a 15-minute drive away, as one head to hotels, beaches, and resorts.

Safety: Overall, Aruba is a safe island. The likelihood of an incident occurring in Oranjestad, Eagle Beach, and Palm Beach is very low; these three are also one of the safest tourist areas. Standard precautions against crime should be taken, especially at night in less crowded areas.

Taxes: Starting July 2024, Aruba applies the $20 Sustainability Fee for non-resident air and sea travelers. It is also applicable through the online Embarkation & Disembarkation Card system, while some travelers, such as residents and quick transfers, are exempted from paying the above fee.

Pet requirements: To travel to Aruba with pets, health documentation, a travel kennel, and a permit are required. Paperwork must be completed before arrival, and pets in carriers or kennels are allowed off the aircraft. The Icarus Jet charter team can assist with processing on arrival.

Dominican Republic

The driving distances from Punta Cana International Airport to the city center are easily accessible. Driving time can change depending on the destination, but in general, it is anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. In this area, the ease of access to most resorts is well characterized, especially in Punta Cana and La Romana.

Safety: The country is generally safe, with Punta Cana being one of the safest places for tourists. However, be cautious and aware while traveling outside the most visited areas, applying basic travel precautions.

Taxes: Taxes are different according to services and sites. It would be better to ask if the taxes were included when booking your accommodation or services.

Pet laws: Pets entering the Dominican Republic need a health certificate from a veterinarian and updated proof of vaccinations. The entry fee is currently approximately 10 USD or 500 DOP. Upon arrival, pet paperwork can be processed from the FBO lounge for ease of entry.
