Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, locally Sardy Field, carries the ICAO code KASE and the IATA code ASE. It sits roughly four miles from Aspen itself, which is the shortest ground leg of any field serving the resort by a wide margin.

That proximity is the entire appeal, and it is also why the restrictions matter so much. Aspen is not a difficult airport because of its runway length. It is difficult because of where it sits.

History

How Aspen became Sardy Field

The airport began in 1946 as a privately owned, public use gravel landing strip founded by Walter Paepcke and John Spachner. The terminal was a log cabin. Aspen at that point was a former mining town in the early stages of becoming a resort, and the airfield was built to serve that ambition rather than any existing demand.

In 1956 the Aspen Airport Corporation deeded the field to Pitkin County, making it publicly owned. The Civil Aeronautics Administration and the county then funded the construction of runway 15/33 along with a connecting taxiway and apron in 1957, an effort led principally by Commissioner Thomas J. Sardy. The airport was formally dedicated as Aspen/Pitkin County, Sardy Field, in 1958.

That first paved runway was 5,200 feet by 60 feet. Today it is 8,006 by 100. The runway has been lengthened and widened repeatedly to keep pace with the aircraft wanting to use it, and the geography around it has not moved. That tension between a growing runway and a fixed valley is the story of this airport, and it is why the restrictions below exist.

Restrictions

What actually decides whether you can fly in

Three things, and none of them are negotiable on the day.

Wingspan. Pitkin County code prohibits any aircraft with a tip to tip wingspan greater than 95 feet. This is not an airport preference. The runway to taxiway separation at Aspen is 320 feet against an FAA standard of 400, and in 1999 the FAA approved modified design standards on the county’s commitment to enforce the wingspan limit.

The clearest example is the Gulfstream G650, whose wingspan is 99 feet 7 inches. It misses the limit by four feet seven inches and cannot operate into Aspen at all. This is the single most common reason an Aspen charter has to be refiled somewhere else, and it catches out operators every season.

Curfew. The airport is closed from 2300 to 0700 local. In practice the operative times are tighter: last wheels-out is 2229 and last wheels-in is 2259. A de-icing queue, a late passenger or an ATC flow restriction can push a departure past that, and once it does the aircraft is staying overnight.

Terrain and altitude. The field sits in a valley with high ground on three sides, which drives a one way in and one way out pattern and steep non-precision minima. There is no precision ILS. At 7,838 feet, density altitude on a warm afternoon erodes performance further, so 8,006 feet of runway is worth considerably less than the number implies.

On The Ground

Hours, fees and what it costs to sit there

Aspen publishes its operating window precisely, and it is worth planning to the minute rather than the hour.

Airport. First wheels in or out 0700. Last wheels-out 2229. Last wheels-in 2259. Closed 2300 to 0700.
Atlantic Aviation, the single FBO. Front desk 0600 to 2200, line service 0600 to 2300.

The fee structure rewards uplift and punishes sitting still. The facility fee is USD 4,023, waived on an uplift of 990 gallons. A habitat fee of USD 25 and a security fee of USD 150 apply. Parking is complimentary for the first hour, then USD 203 per hour for the next eleven, dropping to USD 110 per hour beyond twelve. Hangarage starts at USD 4,247 plus USD 354 per hour, and there is very little of it.

Hangar space is the thing to book early. During storms and peak events it is gone, and the 95 foot wingspan limit means large cabin aircraft cannot be hangared here at all. Ramp parking is generally available; shelter is not.

Demand

When Aspen is busy, and how busy

FAA Air Traffic Activity System figures show what kind of airport this actually is. General aviation accounts for 52 percent of movements and Part 135 air taxi another 29, so more than four in five movements are private or charter. Scheduled commercial is 18 percent, military 1.

Across 2024 the rhythm was pronounced. July was the busiest month at 6,016 movements, with March at 5,118 and August at 5,884. May was the quietest at 1,027, with November next at 2,120. December climbs back to 4,486 on holiday and early ski traffic.

The practical read is that Aspen has two peaks, January to March and June to August, and only two genuinely quiet months. Tuvoli data for 2025 showed activity running ahead of historical averages, so the shoulder months are thinning further. Hangar space and alternate parking need coordinating earlier each year, not later.

2027

The airport closes for seven months in 2027

Aspen has published a full closure from Sunday 4 April 2027 at 2300 through Friday 19 November 2027 at 1900, for runway safety improvements. This is part of a wider modernisation programme running to 2029 that also brings a new passenger terminal and fixed base operator facility.

For anyone planning a 2027 winter or summer season around Aspen, that window has to be worked around now rather than later. Trips inside it will be refiled, most likely through Montrose. We flag it on any booking that touches those dates.

What it means in practice

PPR is not required at Aspen, which is easy to misread. The absence of a prior permission requirement does not make the field open. The wingspan limit and the curfew are the real gates and both are absolute.

Handling is not mandatory, but the field is served by a single fixed base operator, so the practical choice is narrower than at most airports. Both Jet A-1 and AVGAS are available. Fire cover is FAR Part 139 Index B.

Where Aspen traffic goes instead

Aspen diverts often. Weather, performance limits, the curfew or an aircraft that does not clear the wingspan rule all send traffic elsewhere, so the alternate is part of the plan rather than a contingency. Distances below are to central Aspen.

Rifle has the most stable weather in the region and is good for overnight parking. Grand Junction takes the large cabin aircraft Aspen cannot, and currently offers 9,339 feet of usable runway while its threshold is displaced for construction. Montrose carries lower congestion with strong winter capability. Centennial runs 24 hours, which matters when a widespread weather event closes the valley.

Eagle County (KEGE) sits closest at 65 to 68 miles and is also where international arrivals clear customs, since Aspen has none. Each carries its own handling and parking structure, and we pre-coordinate parking at the chosen alternate before departure rather than on the day.
