History

How Montrose became a jet airport

Montrose has had airline service since the 1940s, when Monarch Airlines began flying here. Its successor Frontier Airlines served the present site from the 1950s, running Convair 580s up to Denver. For three decades this was a propeller airport serving a farming and mining valley, not a resort gateway.

Jets arrived in 1982, when Frontier put Boeing 737-200s into Montrose. They were operating off the old runway 12/30, which was 8,500 feet. That is the constraint worth understanding, because it is the reason the airport you fly into today is a different proposition entirely.

The terminal that followed was dedicated on 25 June 1988, with Chuck Yeager cutting the ribbon. It was designed by local architect Patrik Davis, and the passenger seating area still centres on a two sided fireplace, with a tile floor carrying the Ute pictogram for travel.

The decisive change came in the 1990s with the construction of runway 17/35 at 10,000 feet. That single project is what turned Montrose from a regional field into an airport that takes large cabin aircraft at altitude, and it is why Aspen traffic can divert here rather than to Denver.

Growth since has been steady rather than dramatic. The terminal was remodelled and extended 80 feet southward in 2010 and 2011, adding 10,935 square feet. Southwest Airlines was added in late 2020. A further terminal expansion, supported by a Federal Aviation Administration grant of roughly $12.2 million, broke ground in December 2021 and was completed in summer 2024. The airport is operated by Montrose County.

Why crews file Montrose over Aspen

Aspen-Pitkin County is the famous name, and for a trip into Aspen town itself it is by far the shorter ground leg, with Montrose 133 miles away. But Aspen sits at 7,838 feet with 8,006 feet of runway, carries a 95 foot wingspan limit written into Pitkin County code, and closes to all operations between 2300 and 0700 local. Those are the two restrictions that catch out operators who have not flown it before.

Montrose is 2,074 feet lower with 2,000 feet more runway. Lower density altitude and a longer runway both work in favour of take-off performance, which is why the larger aircraft in a fleet are more often filed here. Icarus has long seen holiday traffic diverted from Aspen into Montrose for that reason.

We will file whichever is right for the aircraft and the day. What we will not do is quote Aspen on an aircraft that cannot make the numbers work.

Both Jet A-1 and AVGAS are on the field. Fire cover is FAR Part 139 Index B. The approach is non-precision with PAPI, so December weather is the variable worth planning around, not the infrastructure.

The pressure point here is the ski calendar. Between late December and March the ramp fills, and parking rather than runway is the constraint. That is the part we manage ahead of the date.
