Be Careful

Not a jet field

Megara is an Army helicopter base with a civil general aviation apron run by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority’s general aviation unit. It handles light aircraft, training and helicopters under VFR. It is not equipped for jet operations and we do not file jet charters into it.

It appears in Greek airport data, and crews new to Athens ask about it. The answer is Athens International for any jet, without exception.

The one genuine business aviation use is rotary. As a helicopter base west of the city it can serve a transfer towards the Corinth canal, the northern Peloponnese or western Attica, subject to the military schedule.

Operating

Unusually open, for what it is

No prior permission is needed for a daylight VFR visit, which is unusual. Overnight parking requires PPR, typically requested at least 48 hours ahead. No handling is required. Fuel availability should be confirmed rather than assumed.

The runway is about 1,205 metres, 3,953 feet, at 12 feet elevation. Megara does not routinely handle international arrivals; Athens is the realistic port of entry. The other two military fields near the capital, Elefsis and Tatoi, are closed to visiting civil aircraft altogether.

History

A helicopter base with a civil corner

The airfield has served the Hellenic Army’s aviation branch for decades as a helicopter base. The civil general aviation apron was added to give light aircraft and flying clubs a home near Athens.

It has never been a commercial or jet airport, and nothing about it suggests it will become one.

Nearby

Megara and the Greek fields

Greece is an Athens operation with islands attached. Megara is a general aviation footnote to it.

Athens for any jet. Kalamata for the Peloponnese. Elefsis and Tatoi are the other military fields near Athens, both closed to visitors. The islands, Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Syros, Skiathos, Skyros and Zakynthos, are separate destinations.

Questions

Megara, answered

Can private jets land at Megara?

No. Megara is a Hellenic Army Aviation helicopter base with a civil general aviation apron on its eastern side, a 3,953 foot runway and VFR operations. It handles light aircraft and helicopters. It is not equipped for jet operations and we do not file jet charters into it. It is on this list because it appears in Greek airport data and crews ask about it.

What is Megara actually used for?

Army helicopter operations first, and general aviation second through the civil apron run by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority's general aviation unit. Light aircraft, training and helicopters. For a helicopter transfer west of Athens it has a genuine role.

Does Megara need prior permission?

Not for a day visit in daylight under VFR, which is unusual. Overnight parking requires prior permission, typically requested at least 48 hours in advance. No handling is required.

How long is the runway at Megara?

About 1,205 metres, 3,953 feet, in asphalt, at 12 feet elevation. Those are light aircraft dimensions and the field operates VFR only.

Is there a helicopter use for Megara?

Yes. As a helicopter base with civil access west of Athens, it can serve as a landing site for a rotary transfer towards the Corinth canal, the northern Peloponnese or western Attica, subject to the military schedule.

What are the alternatives near Athens?

Athens International for any jet, without exception. Megara for light aircraft and helicopters only. Elefsis and Tatoi, the other two military fields near the city, are closed to visiting civil aircraft altogether.

Is Megara ever the right answer for a private traveller?

For a helicopter or a light aircraft towards western Attica or the Corinth area, occasionally. We include it so the question is answered honestly rather than left to a quote that cannot be fulfilled.

Is ground handling mandatory at Megara?

No handling is required. Fuel availability should be confirmed rather than assumed.

Do you need a permit to fly a private aircraft into Greece?

No separate landing permit for EU and most third-country private operations. Megara does not routinely handle international arrivals; customs would need arranging in advance and Athens is the realistic port of entry.

What is the history of Megara airfield?

The airfield has served the Hellenic Army's aviation branch for decades as a helicopter base, and the civil general aviation apron was added to give light aircraft and flying clubs a home near Athens. It has never been a commercial or jet airport.

What time zone is Greece in?

Eastern European Time, EET in winter and EEST in summer, which is UTC+2 and UTC+3 respectively.
