It is also the most restricted airport we fly into regularly, and most of what goes wrong on this route goes wrong on the ground at Aspen rather than in the air.
Why private works here
Leave Love Field, five miles from downtown Dallas, with the skis, the boards and the golf bags in the hold, and land at Sardy Field with the car at the aircraft and the slopes minutes away. No airline connection through Denver, no baggage carousel, and the return leaves when the weekend ends, provided it leaves before the curfew. The hour you gain on the clock going west is the first run of the day.
Aircraft fit
Aspen is decided by wingspan before anything else. Pitkin County code prohibits any aircraft with a wingspan over 95 feet, which rules out the largest ultra-long-range jets outright. Light, midsize and super-midsize jets all clear it and all fly Dallas to Aspen nonstop. At 7,838 feet, though, a warm afternoon erodes performance, so on a summer departure with a full cabin the desk plans the fuel and the time of day rather than assuming the 8,006 foot runway does the work.

Aspen has two peaks, January to March and June to August, and only May and November are genuinely quiet. Christmas, New Year and the spring holiday weeks are the tightest of all for aircraft out of Dallas and hangar space at Aspen.

Before you fly
What should I know before flying Dallas to Aspen?
It is a domestic flight, so there is no customs at either end. Bring photo ID; the crew checks it at the aircraft. You can arrive at the FBO ten to fifteen minutes before departure.
Aspen-Pitkin County, Sardy Field, is the arrival. Four miles from town, an 8,006 foot runway at 7,838 feet elevation, one FBO, and no customs. The airport is closed from 2300 to 0700, with last wheels-in at 2259 and last wheels-out at 2229. The approach is non-precision through a valley with high ground on three sides, so a weather day is a real possibility in winter.
The alternates are part of the plan, not a fallback. Rifle is 77 miles and about ninety minutes away, has an ILS, no curfew and steadier weather, and is where Aspen traffic goes when the valley closes. Montrose, 133 miles away with a 10,000 foot runway, takes the large aircraft that Aspen cannot. Eagle County, with a 9,000 foot runway, serves the Vail side of the range.
On the Dallas side, Love Field is five miles from downtown and our home field. Addison is the north Dallas choice with three FBOs open around the clock. Dallas Executive is the quiet option six miles southwest of downtown. DFW carries landing fees and airline traffic and is rarely the right answer for this trip.
Book the hangar when you book the flight. Aspen has very little hangar space, it is gone during storms and peak weeks, and aircraft over the wingspan limit cannot be hangared there at all. If you are planning a 2027 trip, the airport is closed from 4 April to 19 November 2027 for runway work, and the desk will refile you through Montrose or Rifle for anything inside that window.
When to go
When is the best time to fly Dallas to Aspen?
Aspen has two seasons and both are busy. January to March is the ski peak, with Christmas, New Year and the spring holiday weeks the tightest of the year for aircraft out of Dallas and hangar space at Aspen. June to August is the summer peak, and July is the busiest month of all. For any of those, give the desk firm dates a few weeks ahead.
May and November are the quiet months, when two or three days of notice is normal and the airport is at its easiest. In winter, the desk plans departures early in the day so a de-icing queue or a weather hold never puts you on the wrong side of the curfew.
