Where it fits

A quick climber built for smaller groups

The Learjet 60 is a twin-engine midsize jet that suits groups of six or fewer best. The figures on this page are for the 60XR, the last version built: Bombardier publishes 2,405 NM with four passengers and two crew on NBAA IFR reserves, and the original Learjet 60 flies about 2,330 NM.

Its strength is getting high quickly. Bombardier's 60XR fact sheet shows a climb to 41,000 feet about 18.5 minutes after a maximum-weight takeoff, and the aircraft is certified to 51,000 feet. Two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW305A engines of 4,600 lb thrust each do the work.

The trade-off is the cabin. At 17 feet 8 inches long and 5 feet 8.5 inches tall it is short for the class, and total baggage is about 48 cubic feet. It was certified in January 1993 and built until 2013, with the 60SE from 2004 and the 60XR from late 2007.

Not the aircraft for

Groups of more than six who want room to move, or trips with serious luggage. The cabin is only just stand-up height, the 48 cubic feet of baggage fills quickly, and the 5,450 foot takeoff at maximum weight is more runway than most midsize peers need. For more space in the same class, the Citation Latitude, with a six-foot flat-floor cabin and 127 cubic feet of baggage, is the better tool.

Missions

What the desk books it for

01

London to Cairo in one leg

London to Cairo is 1,897 NM, inside the 60XR's published range with four passengers. The desk plans the winds and weight on the day and files permits alongside the trip.

02

East Africa and the Gulf

Cairo to Nairobi (1,914 NM) and Nairobi to Dubai (1,898 NM) both sit inside the published range when the load stays at four passengers.

03

Dubai to the Maldives

At 1,642 NM, the shortest of its route cards, this sector leaves the most margin in the 60XR's range for a small party heading to the islands.

04

Getting high, fast

Business trips for four to six where time in the climb matters: the 60XR reaches 41,000 feet about 18.5 minutes after a maximum-weight takeoff and is certified to 51,000 feet.

Routes the desk flies on the Learjet 60

Sectors from our route guides that sit inside the Learjet 60XR's published range with four passengers aboard. Each opens to the flight time, the airports at both ends and what to know before you fly.

Cabin and baggage

Only just stand-up, short and well used

The cabin measures 17 feet 8 inches from the cockpit divider to the end of the pressurised compartment, including the lavatory, 5 feet 11 inches wide and 5 feet 8.5 inches tall. Shorter passengers stand upright; taller ones will stoop. Six or seven seats is the typical layout, and the 60XR is certified for up to eight passengers plus a belted lavatory seat.

A full-width private lavatory sits at the rear. Baggage totals about 48 cubic feet: roughly half in an aft external compartment and roughly half in the lavatory area inside the cabin, which can be reached in flight.

That is not much for a full cabin. Tell the desk the bag count when you enquire, because on this aircraft the luggage often decides the headcount.

Performance and airports

Runways, climb and the airports it opens

Bombardier publishes a takeoff distance of 5,450 feet for the 60XR at maximum weight at sea level on a standard day, more than most midsize peers need, and a landing distance of 3,420 feet. The payoff is the climb: 41,000 feet about 18.5 minutes after takeoff, and a certified ceiling of 51,000 feet.

With that takeoff figure, the desk checks runway length against the real weight for every trip, at the executive airports on the routes it flies, including Teterboro, Dallas Love Field and Farnborough.

Longer takeoff distances matter most at high and hot fields. At Aspen, the runway length available on the day depends on elevation, temperature and weight, and London City requires a type and crew approved for its steep approach. The desk checks both for the specific aircraft before a quote goes out.

Learjet 60 against the other midsize jets

How the Learjet 60 lines up against the other midsize jets we cover. The Citation Latitude and Legacy 450 have six-foot cabins and far more baggage room, and the Citation Sovereign and Legacy 450 fly further; the Learjet's case is its climb and ceiling for a small group on a medium sector.

Chartering with Icarus Jet

How we charter the Learjet 60

We source Learjet 60s from ARGUS-audited and Wyvern-certified operators, and the operator's name and audit status are on the quote. Because the cabin and baggage space are small, the desk checks range, headcount and bags against the real trip before it checks availability, so the aircraft offered is one that genuinely fits.

Quotes are all-in and itemised: aircraft and crew, positioning, landing and handling, fuel and taxes, with nothing added after the flight that was not on the page. The number depends on where the nearest suitable aircraft is based, the dates and the airports, so we price your actual trip instead of publishing a rate.

Questions

Learjet 60 questions the desk gets

How far can a Learjet 60 fly nonstop?

Bombardier publishes 2,405 NM for the Learjet 60XR with four passengers and two crew on NBAA IFR reserves. The original Learjet 60 flies about 2,330 NM. That covers sectors such as London to Cairo, and winds, temperature and weight decide the real figure on the day.

How many passengers does a Learjet 60 seat?

Six or seven in a typical layout. The 60XR is certified for up to eight passengers plus a belted lavatory seat, but the cabin is short, so the desk plans comfortable trips around six or fewer.

Can you stand up in the cabin?

Only just. The cabin is 5 feet 8.5 inches tall, 5 feet 11 inches wide and 17 feet 8 inches long including the lavatory, so taller passengers will stoop. If standing room matters, the desk will quote a Citation Latitude or Legacy 450, both six feet tall.

How much luggage fits on a Learjet 60?

About 48 cubic feet in total: roughly 24 in an aft external compartment and roughly 24 in the lavatory area, which can be reached in flight. That is tight for six people on a long trip, so tell the desk the bag count when you enquire.

What is the difference between the Learjet 60, 60SE and 60XR?

The 60SE (2004) added a higher maximum takeoff weight, a standard APU and triple-disc brakes. The 60XR (late 2007) added Collins Pro Line 21 avionics and five floor plans, and was built until 2013. The desk will tell you which version is on your quote.

How fast does a Learjet 60 climb and cruise?

Bombardier's 60XR fact sheet gives a typical cruise of Mach 0.79 and a high-speed cruise of 466 knots, with a climb to 41,000 feet about 18.5 minutes after a maximum-weight takeoff. It is certified to 51,000 feet.

Why does the Learjet 60 need a longer runway?

Bombardier publishes 5,450 feet at maximum weight at sea level on a standard day, more than most midsize peers. At high or hot airports the distance needed grows, so the desk checks the runway, the weight and the conditions for the specific trip before it quotes.
