Who it suits

Longer legs with the cabin full

The seven super midsize jets in our guides publish 3,075 to 4,018 NM. Two of them quote that range with eight passengers rather than the usual four: the Challenger 350 at 3,200 NM and the Falcon 50EX at 3,075 NM. The Praetor 600 publishes the longest figure in the class at 4,018 NM with four passengers, and the Legacy 500 still shows 2,948 NM with eight aboard at Mach 0.80.

Every model has a stand-up cabin, from 5 feet 8 inches in the Citation X+ and 5 feet 11 inches in the Falcon 50EX to 6 feet in the Challenger 350, Citation Longitude, Legacy 500 and Praetor 600, and 6 feet 3 inches in the Gulfstream G200. Four of them have flat floors: the Challenger 350, Longitude, Legacy 500 and Praetor 600. Typical layouts seat eight, with the Challenger 350 and the G200 offered for up to ten.

Baggage runs from 82 cubic feet in the Citation X+ to 155 cubic feet in the Legacy 500 and Praetor 600, and on several models part of it stays reachable in flight: all 106 cubic feet on the Challenger 350, the walk-in 112 cubic foot compartment on the Longitude reached through the aft lavatory, and a 35 cubic foot closet on the Legacy 500. The trade for the size is runway, with published takeoff distances from 4,084 feet (Legacy 500) to 6,083 feet (G200).

01

Range quoted with a full cabin

Bombardier publishes the Challenger 350's 3,200 NM with eight passengers and two crew, Dassault the Falcon 50EX's 3,075 NM with eight, and Embraer shows the Legacy 500 at 2,948 NM with eight at Mach 0.80. That is the number a full party actually flies, not a four-passenger headline.

02

Baggage you can reach in flight

The Challenger 350's 106 cubic foot compartment is accessible from the cabin throughout the flight, the Longitude's walk-in compartment is reached through the aft lavatory, and the Praetor 600's external bay is about 8 feet long, so skis and golf bags fit.

03

Speed, altitude and a trijet option

The Citation X+ cruises at 527 knots at 35,000 feet with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935 and is certified to 51,000 feet. The Falcon 50 carries three engines, which adds redundancy on long overwater and remote routes.

Questions

Super Midsize questions the desk gets

How far can a super midsize jet fly nonstop?

The class publishes 3,075 to 4,018 NM, but the passenger load behind each figure differs. The Falcon 50EX's 3,075 NM and the Challenger 350's 3,200 NM are quoted with eight passengers; the Legacy 500's 3,125 NM, the G200's 3,400 NM, the Longitude's 3,500 NM and the Praetor 600's 4,018 NM with four. The Citation X+ publishes 3,242 NM at maximum takeoff weight on full fuel. The desk compares them on your party, not on the headline.

How many passengers does a super midsize jet seat?

Typical layouts seat eight. The Challenger 350 and the Gulfstream G200 are offered with up to ten seats, and the Falcon 50's approved executive interiors seat eight or nine. Manufacturers list up to 12 for the Citation X, Longitude, Legacy 500 and Praetor 600, though a United States registered Longitude may be limited to 11 passengers.

Can you stand up, and is the floor flat?

All seven have stand-up cabins: 5 feet 8 inches in the Citation X+, 5 feet 11 inches in the Falcon 50EX, 6 feet in the Challenger 350, Longitude, Legacy 500 and Praetor 600, and 6 feet 3 inches in the G200. The Challenger 350, Longitude, Legacy 500 and Praetor 600 have flat floors; the Citation X does not, and a flat floor is not confirmed by a primary source for the Falcon 50EX or the G200.

How much luggage fits?

From 82 cubic feet in the Citation X+ up through 106 (Challenger 350), 112 (Longitude), 115 (Falcon 50EX), 150 (G200) to 155 cubic feet in the Legacy 500 and Praetor 600. The Legacy 500's 110 cubic foot external bay is loaded from the ground and is not reachable in flight, while all of the Challenger 350's compartment is. Tell the desk the bag count when you enquire.

Which super midsize jet is fastest?

The Citation X+ cruises at 527 knots at 35,000 feet with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935, against Mach 0.92 on the original Citation X. Most Citation Xs in charter are original aircraft, so the X+ figures should not be applied to them unchanged. The desk tells you which version is being offered for your dates.

How much runway do they need?

At maximum weight, sea level, published takeoff distances are 4,084 feet (Legacy 500), 4,717 feet (Praetor 600), 4,810 feet (Longitude), 4,835 feet (Challenger 350), 4,890 feet (Falcon 50EX), 5,250 feet (Citation X+) and 6,083 feet (Gulfstream G200). Elevation and temperature change all of them, so the desk checks airport suitability for the specific aircraft.

Why does the Falcon 50 have three engines?

Dassault built it as a trijet, and the third engine adds redundancy on long overwater and remote routes. The Falcon 50EX flies eight passengers 3,075 NM at Mach 0.80 on NBAA IFR reserves and takes off in 4,890 feet at maximum weight. Its 49,000 foot ceiling applies from a certain serial number or with a modification, so the desk checks the specific aircraft.

How many pilots, and is there a cabin attendant?

All seven types are certified with a minimum crew of two pilots. Whether a cabin attendant flies depends on the operator, the layout and the trip, so tell the desk if you want one. The operator and its audit status appear on the quote.

When should I choose super midsize over large cabin?

When the party is ten or fewer and the sector fits inside 3,075 to 4,018 NM on your actual load. Move up to a large cabin jet for more than ten passengers, a wider cabin than the 7 feet 2 inches of the Challenger 350 and G200, or range beyond 4,018 NM, which the Falcon 900LX extends to 4,750 NM.

How does the desk choose among the seven?

It compares range on your real load first, because some figures assume four passengers and others eight, then baggage and whether you need it in flight, then the runways at both ends. Long sectors point to the Praetor 600 or Longitude, a full cabin with bags to the Challenger 350, and shorter runways to the Legacy 500.
